Maximum size of a map (in miles or km)
« on: 16 Apr 2003, 03:53:09 »
 ;D Hi everybody,

I would like to design my village (and after I would like to conquer the world). There are few houses but the area is huge (50*50 km).

So this is my question:
What is the maximum size (in miles or km) of a map ?

I don't know.

But it is noticeable that the official maps are all the same size.   The size of the island differs, but the overall map is the same.

Nogova is by far the largest island, and is known as "Lag-ova" to some.    It may be possible to make a bigger island but decrepit old comps like mine won't be able to cope with it.

If you want comments on what you've done already, post it on the beta testing board.

 ;)Thanks a lot for your help...

 :-\...but I really would like to know what is the maximum size of a map.
I have seen on web sites that a map can cover 100km2. But I would like to have precize informations or links about the maximum size.

Thanks
See you next

At the moment the standard size for maps is 12.8 km X 12.8 km, that is 163.84 square km.

In miles that is 7.9488 miles X 7.9488 miles, which is 63.183 square miles.

 ;) Thanks for your answer Planck,

Do you know if another game can have a bigger map ?

hey there

I have a map in game that is 51.2 x 51.2 km big

so that would be 2621.44  square KM

Which is a bit more than Planck indicates

@ MadFred

These larger maps are not the standard size maps, I did specify that I was outlining the standard size.

Also these larger maps produce a pronounced lag when viewing the map, in the case of the 51.2 km map, this can also result in not being able to actually place any objects.

The amount of lag depends on your computer specifications, but not every OFP player has a very powerful machine and therefore these maps will never be standard.

And of course, these maps cannot be loaded into WrpEdit.

You are absolutely right Planck, I didnt mean to be a critic.

Just wanted to state that the size in Cortex's original post (50x50) was doable.
But you are correct, It is way better to use standard sizes!

Bye!

A lone wolf made 2 new islands...1 that is 25.6x25.6km and one that is 51.2x51.2km...but as planck said...12.8x12.8km is the standard size. And also, as planck said, the islands that 25.6x25.6km and 51.2x51.2km will lag veeeeeeeeeeeery much...even on veeeeeeery good machines...that is because, if u find a way to place objects, then just think about all the objects that u will have to place...Making a 51.2x51.2 island would need 4 times as many objects as a 12.8x12.8km island...
And, as planck also said, u can not get larger islands than 12.8x12.8km islands into WRPEdit...

16 times actually.

12.8x12.8=163.84 km2
25.6x25.6=655.36 km2
51.2x51.2=2621.44 km2

oke oke ;D

16 times...anyway, that would lag :-\

Just think about it...it would need like 800 000 objects :o :-\
ugh, that would take ages...BIS would release OFP2 before that island would be done... ;D

Not with the road tool it wouldn't....but yes...it would lag like hell  ;D

It took me a week to add 140,000 plants to two islands with that little gizmo  ;D ;D ;D

Yeppers, some facts into play...

http://flashpoint.nekromantix.com/wrp.php

We have had few nice multiplayer COOP missions on our own SEB NAM textures/objects using test 25.6km x 25.6km map, its very nice considering the tool which we used to create it in about minute or two.

Man you gotta bring some snack on those long HUEY rides from target and back to base, hooyah!

Some specific points about lagging; I can make default sized island lag too, its all about elevations guys. Correctly made 51km x 51km island dont lag at all. If someone could call it a problem, these larger islands as they need more objects - that eats more memory. Its common to see my 512mb ram setup to make windows swap like mad. Also that our 25km test map with hmm about 200-300 thousand objects (sorry cant remeber the exact amount) runs on even 256mb ram machine.

So bottom line is that you can make 12km island lag or 51km island lag free if you correctly adjust elevations.
