US Special Forces Addons
« on: 17 Oct 2002, 01:22:07 »
I know there are several threads open discussing addons in the works of US special forces troops.  We have Bibmi and STEELE working on one set of several groups (which is looking excellent, by the way), then there is Skaven, who I believe is working on Navy SEALs, and there is SelectThis, who says he will revisit his classic Ranger and Delta packs after version 2 of the 'Nam Pack is completed.

Why not combine the effort?

For example, instead of having two Army Ranger addons each of grade A quality, the editors can work together and produce a single one of A+ quality.  Also, for several of these addons, it is necessary to have new weapons, like certain versions of the M4, for example.  Again, if both addons are going to use a certain M4 variant, why build two separate ones from scratch?

It seems to be working for the 'Nam Pack, where a group of addon-makers coordinating with each other is creating an addon of incredible quality.

How about a group of editors pool their effort and create a single, solid-gold, US Special Forces Addon Pack?

I do not know, just an idea.

I would like to do this through Ballistic Addon Studios.

I would like to take the best of whats out there....contact the authors....ask if they are interested in having their work submitted to the Ballistic Addon Studios Special Forces pack.

My vision is create a pack with all relevant equipment units and vehicles.

The question is....what to include.

My personal opinion is these are minimum.
-BAS SOAR helos...LB and MH-60L, MH-47E
- STTs Rangers and Deltas
- Flipers M4 carbines
-STTs Kawasaki bike

What do we use for Seals, Combat Controllers, Special Forces and PJ's??? Any ideas...ofpeditor asked this before....but whats the "best of the best" of the reamining units. Any other weapons need including??

I wanna make this a reality but I'm gonna need help from the community. Perhasp ofpeditor would like to take this on as his own BAS project as well as being our prime beta tester ;-)

Right on!!!
You might also think of including the HK Mod weapons and units in progress, the IGW wetsuit, the Zodiak pack, the Ghillie Snipers, Tales Of War M-14's/M-21/FAV's, and the BAS (TJP?) SSN w/ drydock shelter.
Well...? Whacha waiting for? Get cracking boys...!

to BAS:

let's say you contact the authors and all agree. will you delay the release of your choppers so that they would be included in this "pack" or would you release them as planned and include them in later when such a pack is finnished?

i only have so much foam in my mouth, to wait longer would be unthink....(Duff collapses, the floor gives him a light tap on the forehead)

Dont worry Duff, this pack will not delay the release of the BAS helo's

The LB and the MH-60L should be out this weekend, so you can wipe your mouth dry, but keep the wipes close to hand ;)

The helo's will be re-released in the pack, which means that there will be improvements, and special little bonuses for the people who bother to download it.

Hopefully the packs:

Marines and
Spec Ops

Will be the definitive packs for tese types of troops, this will mean that most editors will hopefully base their missions around these packs, which will reduce the addon conflicts when playing MP.

cheers

Yeah, it would be really great to have only one (very, very good) US-Specialforces-Pack, because then people won't have to download 8-10 different Addons to play one Mission...
Really good idea!
Would be fine if the BAS-Team, Fliper, the LoBo-Guys and the people from the SEB-Packs could work together.

Bimbi's Special forces (DELTA and ranger troops) will be better than STT's versions, it would be better to use those.

Tigershark:
In reply to the second question in your post...  What might be done is this... all the modders that produce unit addons take a look at what the actual units in question are equipped with/wearing, and collaborate to produce the most realistic addon. There are many great addons out there already, though they must be brought up to standard and polished. You modders need to determine if you need to scrap your previous models and build new ones from scratch, ( More time consuming but better looking, IMHO. ) or simply make a few changes to the existing addons to get something out to the community quickly. Or something in between, as many existing models are fine for most of the operations these guys do, and some could be added for more spcialized roles. For instance, the USAF SPECOPS guys often would deploy with the aircrew helmet, Bibmi has PJ's equipped with this. Skaven already has great looking SEALs, but they could be equipped with the Delta caving helmet, and the aircrew helmet as well, they use all of these from time to time.
Many units in the US SPECOPS community dress and loadout with similar kit, as these forces are all a part of the US SOCOM. They maintain a certain degree of commonality in this respect so as to enable smoother operational capabiity when deployed as a joint services task force. That is, operating with other SPECOPS units.
Maybe what could be done is a generic style operator, with slight variations in kit. The uniforms would be common, ( BDU's in black, woodland, desert, and snow and/or urban, USAF style OD flightsuits, and black neoprene wetsuit, etc. ) as all these units wear them. The variations would be in helmet, ( Caving/hockey helmet's, boonie hat, balaclava, OD scarf/bandana/bandage wrap, aircrew helmet, and sometimes watchcap/ballcap. ) loadbearing gear, ( Commercially produced off-the-shelf rucksacks and vests, as well as miltay issue ALICE packs, etc. ) and weapons, ( US SOCOM forces mostly use the M-4/M203 SOPMOD these days, but some prefer foreign makes and models, while others use older tried and true weapons like the M-14, M1911 MEU .45, M-49 and Stoner machineguns.)
This is something that can only be accomplished if the modding community can put aside any ego/personalty issues, and learn to cooperate and communicate as a team. My suggestion is for all of you to get together and choose a team name/tag for the group, and a common private communcations forum. A group website could be set up as a showcase for the various addon projects, perhaps here in OFPEC. The various members vote/choose a leader, who in turn picks a second in charge. They then delegate projects to the other members who are most skilled in a particular area. This is how I would do it, and have seen done in many successful moding communities online. But the key is to work for the greater good of the game players, and resist the need for singular recognition. A kind of democratic socialism if you will.
Just my thoughts, and sorry for the long winded speech.

Tigershark, in terms of the operators for the pack, definitely contact Bibmi, just look at some of his work at his site here: http://www.angelfire.com/games4/bibspecops/

If BAS handles this project, I guess I can sleep easy then.  ;D

Fliper is on ballistics and although a lot of people are contributing to the SEB nam pack out of the three most active people (me/stt/ebud) me and selectthis are already in ballistics, so already the team youve asked for is already in existance as ballistics addon studios :)
