Create your patrol group.    Give them some move waypoints where you want them to patrol.     Now give them a cycle waypoint and place it close to the first move waypoint.    When they get to the last move WP, they will go back to the first one.

Synchronise lets you coordinate different groups.    If you synchro a waypoint of one group with a waypoint of another group, the first group to arrive at its waypoint will wait there till the other group arrives at its waypoint.   Both groups will move on to their next waypoints at the same time.

I highly recommend the tutorials in the Editors Depot - Getting started.   They cover a lot of stuff like this.

And if yoy synchronize the cycle wapoint to a trigger, and place another wp after the cycle wp, you can make the group cease patroling and start fighting once the trigger fires. This way you can make the patrol walk around in safe mode until the action starts.

depends on what kind of patrol, if you want a

slow death patrol
with guns out through a war zone, then you put their waypoint on safe, limited speed, and in each ones init field you put:  this setunitpos "up";   then they will walk upright the entire time guns aimed and when they encounter an enemy will simply shoot him, no ducking, no nothing they'll just cap him like a death patrol going through killing the injured.

for a routine, going through safe territory patrol
then you just don't put in the setunitpos "up" and they'll duck when they encounter the enemy and all that, but for a city patrol do the above.

those are the only two types of patrols i can come up with.
