How to add smoke or any other particle thingie to a bullet?

Can it be a "bullet" or must it be some sort of pre-defined projectile, like a LAW ?

Is it possable to add the smoke trail effect from a LAW rocket and add it to a M16 bullet ?!!

I really need to know because this effect is the last piece of the puzzel on my M73 Gauss Rifle (Rail Gun)
