Multiplayer lan problems
« on: 27 Jun 2004, 22:46:04 »
Hmmmm...... where to start.  Alright I need troubleshooters here. I created a mission and I have about six friends that I  get together with and lan. What I do is copy all my files from my Operation Flashpoint folder so that all the cpu's have the same addons etc..... Now that we all have the same downloads same version of ofp and everything else. I try to host the game.

As soon as every one has joined and is ready to go, I select ok. Then my ofp just crashes. Now this only happens with my mission. Not the BAS missions etc.... The only thing I have done different to my mission, that could have caused this, was change the terrain detail and visibility with a benchmark trigger.

Now the other screwed up thing here, is that I can get this mission to lan with a single cpu but not multiple. But like I said other missions are fine.  Everyone has the exact same version and addons etc....

Thanks in advance to anyone may be able to figure this out.

Let's try the logical way first.

Everything but your own mission works - the problem is in your mission.

You can play your mission solo, but not with others - the problem is a some sort of a conflict between the computers.

In your mission you set terrain detail and visibility with a trigger - this raises two questions. -->
  a) how can you set terrain detail in MP based on benchmark. Every client could have different terrain details, which sounds impossible or at least ridiculous in MP. Does OFP allow this?
  b) have you tried hosting your mission without the benchmark trigger?
Not all is lost.

terrain detail can be set locally as can viewdistance

I have seen some missions where its been used in this way for pilots and i myself use the setviewdistance to give snipers an increased viewdistance over everybbody else

I have tried this same mission and it will work when lanned on one computer but not another. It used to work on all computers that I lanned with. After I added the viewdistance, it works on some computers and not others, even though all the computers have the same addons etc.....

I think either somehow the files are getting currupt, or the viewdistance is causing problems. I don't know.

I can't be the lan set up, because all other missions will work fine.

I know viewdistance can be set locally, but setting terrain level just sounds silly. Because with higher terrain detail level the landscape has a lot more little slopes and peaks, some objects would be in different places for some players and where a player with high detail could hide in behind a slope the one who had low detail level could not.

Anyway, what's the viewdistance you're trying to set for the clients? Maybe your benchmark trigger is set up wrong and the clients receive a too high viewdistance causing them to crash.
Not all is lost.

My understanding is that when creating a multiplayer game, ofp automatically defaults the terrain and viewdistance. I changed this to viewdistance 2000 and terrain high with a trigger. I was unable to change the terrain and viewdistance during game play. I don't know why ofp it like this with mutliplayer games.

So I made this trigger so everyone would be universally set at 2000 viewdistance and high terrain. Everyone is running a radeon 9600 or higher so it runs fine. I just can't understand why the mission can lan with some cpu and not others.

I don't think it's the mission though, or the terrain and viewdistance settings, because why would it run fine on one cpu that I lan with, but then when I try to lan with a different cpu it crashes? It's not crashing during the game either. It crashes right after everyone selects their player and I select ok.

I appreciate all the help.

As soon as I get a chance I am going to try and mess with this thing some more. I'll post any results.

Welll, when all else fails, a fresh install of OFP and all the addons, on all the cpu's, did the trick. I guess from all the adding and removing of files something got messed up.
