rpg fire straight up?
« on: 06 Apr 2004, 21:14:23 »
I'm making an intro scene where a LRRP team get ambushed blah blah blah. THe intial contact is by some NVA with rpgs. I've scripted them to target certain team members and invisable targets  when they change from there AK47 to the rpg they look straight up and fire into the air. Could this be from the target not being in the line of sight (tree in the way?) ???

There are 4 things that could cause this

1. The unit firing the rpg does not know the target exists, ie well out of los
2. The unit may indager himself by firing at the target, ie a rock in close proximety to the shooter
3. The target does not exist / is out of range / or cannot be destroyed
4. The target is behind a static object or friendly unit.

First check the names are correct eg.

shooter dotarget whateva
~2
shooter dofire whateva

(thats another thing, dont JUST use dofire)

then... if that dosent work, put the units on a open plan back to back at some distance away and use the command to make sure the unit is destroyable.

If all that dosent work, i could help you out if you send me the mission.

Thanks for the ideas. I used the dotarget and dofire, I'll just do a quick desert island check, to narrow  down the problem. Great adivce thanks

That problem with shooting into the sky is usually caused by the "fire" command. I personally think that's is usable maximally for shooting grenades in cutscenes  :-\

That could be the case, I did some tests. THe command works if the target is a tank but not a soldier.  I decided to try the NVA 60mm mortar, and found it worked fine. The next thing I'm looking for is if there is an animation which shows an RTO using the handset? I've looked through AK moves V1.0 but haven't seen anything.

Yes the fire command does make them fire straight up. It is good for shooting flares and smoke grenades. And to get vehicles to fire. Vehicles don't always fire straight up.

What would the command be to get a rpg unit to fire in a normal manner?....Dofire?

There is no absolutely working command forcing AI soldiers fire "there where I want". That suc*s, I know  :P You'll have to make some tests with combinations of DoFire, DoTarget, reveal etc...
It's a very obvious and probably unsolvable problem.

You are using the invisble target add on right, maybe try using the west armored target. I'm assuming that you already are.  :-\

PS Also I assume your using setheight blah blah blah?

I tried using the invisable target but the unit just ignored it . I didn't use the setheight, that could have been the problem I'll give it a go.
