AI Problem and targeting question
« on: 23 Feb 2004, 17:23:20 »
Hi there :-)

I've got a slight problem with the AI. In my mission, me and my team are dropped of at the edge of a town where the enemy is already waiting for us. I wanted my units to get out and immediatly start a fire fight. But they just stand around and don't shoot. Hope you can help me with that.

And my other problem. I want an AA soldier to shot down one of my helicopters but one time they hit and then again they don't. I tried setting the skills to maximum but still they didn't hit always.

Thank you for your cooperation and have a nice week  ;)

Even on max skill the AI won't hit a chopper every time.   They (like human players) tend to miss when the crossing rate is too high.   You'll either have to fake a hit in some way, or add another AA loon to the force.

As for making them attack, can you tell us a bit more about the circumstances?   Is the player the group leader?    Is this a cutscene or during gameplay?   If two opposing groups are fairly close to each other and not firing, it sounds like the fundamental problem is one of unit placement:   none of them can see each other.   Move everybody around a little.

No doubt somebody will suggest using a reveal command.   This would certainly help, but I suspect it would be crude and unrealisitic in this case, and not good game design.

It's during a regular mision. The player is just an ordinary LAW soldier. The chopper with the troops lands infront of a acity which is occupied by the enemy. When my team exits there are already about 3 enemys 30m away. But at the beginning noone shoots. But when I start shooting at the enemy, all enemies immediatly return fire.
In most cases my troops walk about 8 meters to the enemy, then first does the enemy shoot them down.
i wanted some instant action. Out of the chopper and imediatly a firefight.
Hope you've got a suggestion.
Thanks

Hmmm .... Well if they are already in full view of each other I can think of four possible basic solutions:   improve the weather/time of day;  increase the skill of all loons;  improve the waypoints;  or if all else fails beat the game over the head with a reveal command...

"Westgrp1 reveal _x" forEach units Eastgrp1

Syntax not guaranteed.

However, if I were you I would change the setup.  Have the enemy group on a hold waypoint in the middle of the town:  as the chopper approaches they "hear" it and come to investigate.   In other words use a switch trigger to put them into a seek and destroy waypoint close to the chopper landing spot.    This is going to look much more realistic than if they just stand there watching an enemy chopper land 30m away without doing anything about it.

Playtest it until you get the distances and angles right, but the idea is to have the enemy running towards your group as you disembark.   Because they are moving it will be much easier for your group to see them.

A few enemy should remain in the town: perhaps medics, drivers, cooks, clerks, etc - poorly armed and lower skill.
