They are re-doing the model. I don't know if they will start from scratch, but a large part needs to be re-done.
So I'd say it's still a while off, yes.

Well, with Tales Of War, at least we know we will be getting a quality addon.  Hopefully we see this soon as it is an often used helicopter in the U.S. arsenal, particularly for Specops.

well - not really spec ops - since its hard to make an unoticed incursion or extraction in a beast like that

they are mostly used for marines in combat situations - ive never heard of spec ops using them as a regular chopper - they use blackhawks, pavehawks and littlebirds (160th SOAR)

but yep - when its released it will be amamzing.

Actually, Air Force Special Operations Command uses the MH-53J/M Pave Low a great deal, for combat search and rescue, for covert insertion/extraction and resupply. Training is with the 58th Special Operations Wing at Kirtland Air Force, N.M.; many AFSOC units are based at Hurlburt Field, Fla.

Owing to their advanced sensor package, Pave Lows led the first Apaches into Iraq in Desert Storm.

MH-53s took part in the extraction of the downed F-117 and F-16 pilots in Kosovo. That is not to say they are without fault. They are big and expensive to maintain.

Other H-53 variants have more traditional heavy hauling uses, particularly the CH-53 Sea Stallion.

For a fictional account of the MH-53 in action, I'd refer you to Clancy's Clear and Present Danger.

Ah, er. The H-53 choppers aren't "invulnerable" to ground fire.
Sure it has a thicker belly than most choppers, but as stated in Clear & Present Danger (Which isn't too fictious on those accounts) small-arms fire can penetrate the body of the helicopter.

What makes the H-53 choppers better than the rest is that it takes a whole lot more small-arms fire to bring it down.
If one AK-74 clip can take down a Blackhawk it would take 3-4 clips to take down an H-53. (Fictious numbers, they're just examples)
Unless they got lucky and hit the pilot + co pilot with the first few rounds. That would be a bummer ;D

Yeah the RPG was a dud and didn't go off, if it had a lot more than 9 soldiers would have died.

Yeah, it wasn't as if it was a live RPG and the sheer big-a$$edness of the CH-53 just stopped it from exploding.

It's amazing that such a big tough chopper can be so fast.  The Marines love it because it can actually keep pace with the Cobra gunships that escort it, so they can really open up and race to their destination.  Other transports usually hold up the gunnies because they're too slow.
