Has anyone tryed to record a cutscene?
« on: 22 Aug 2003, 14:29:05 »
Sorry, but this is the only forum that looked like it could help.

I wanted to use OFP to make a war movie.  Cool idea, eh?  Only problem is that I was using Camtasia to "record" a cut scene to an avi file.  It looks choppy, and the picture cuts in and out.  I tried different frame rates both in the game and in Camtasia.

Anyone know of a good way to do this?  I wanted to make a bunch of cut scenes and bring them into Adobe Premere and make a full movie.

Maybe different software. :-\

I thought about doing a video out and recording it to tape, then feeding it back in, but that would take away from the picture too much.

I also tried lowering the res to 640x480.  A TV picture is 320x240.

Any ideas would be great.  I know I can do this. ;)

A TV picture is not 320 x 240 but that's not why we're here.

I suggest checking out Fraps, I've had better results with it than most screencapture-to-avi programs.
Fraps2 can record up to 1024x768 without problem, and it can record sound.

Me and my AA:O squad recorded two vids in the game which were edited together, you can see the result here (the two top news-posts).

Ok KTottE.  You're the man of the hour on this one....

#1. FRAPS takes a great shot, even at 1024x768 it's smooth.
#2. I was told that a TV was about 200 to 300 in height because of the scan rate, but that's not why I am reponding.

I coul;d only record a bit, so I am registering it.  Thanks.

I'm sold on the picture capture. :D  We need a drool icon here.

I do a lot of screen capture because I make tutorials for work, but I have always used Camtasia.  Fraps is mighty cool.

Thanks for your reply.

This is coming along real nice.  I'm getting the hang of cameras.  I can chop it up later.  As soon as I register, I can start my movie. ;D

Thanks again, KTottE.

You're welcome :)

By the way, check out the little button in the upper right corner of your post, it reads 'modify'. That lets you add things to an existing post instead of having to make a new one :)

Looking forward to seeing what you manage to put together.

Any software you recomend for cutting and pasting the AVI's together?  I'm using a copy of Adobe Premere, and I don't care much for it.  And if I buy it, it's very high.

I looked at VirtualDub too.

Ahhhh.  Now I see the edit button.  I'm on dialup here at home, and the buttons are the last to get rendered.

So far I only have a chopper landing and men getting in, but the camers angles weigh into it too.  I'm sure it will be a while before I get something worth showing. ;D

This is very cool.

You certainly picked the right person to ask.
This summer I graduated from a three-year education focusing primarly on videoediting and mostly digital videoediting :)

Adobe Premiere is not the best choice out there if you want to make professional productions, I agree wholeheartedly, but it's on the cheaper end of things if you compare to better suites such as Avid XPress or Media 100i.
If you want a low-cost but effective editing application I suggest checking out Pinnacle Studio. From what I know it's even cheaper than Adobe Premiere (unless you buy a whole package deal) and people I know have had good experiences from it.

Otherwise there are applications such as Vegas Video, but I do not have a price or anyone to ask about experiences.

My suggestion is checking out http://www.dvinfo.net/conf and specifically "NLE editing on the PC", there they have many discussions going on which editing application to go with.
They can also help you with the editing side of things, asking how to achieve certain effecs in your application and such.

But, this is veering from OFP to NLE (Non Linear Editing) so I suggest you direct further questions on the non-OFP side of things to me in a private message instead of the thread. And we can use the thread to discuss the OFP side of things, mainly how to achieve certain camera effects etc.
