OK. I can make a mission just fine. What I am having trouble with now is the breifing, etc. Yes, I have read three different tutorials on the subject. they have been very good and comphrehensive. What they each have been missing is:

Where, precisely, is the breifing, etc, HTML supposed to go??

All the tutorials say, "do X, Y, and Z. this will make blah blah work". Well, great, but where do XY and Z go? As in: what file do they go in? Do I make a new file and put it in the mission folder? Should I do this on the mission editor screen under 'breifing', where I can also edit the weather, time, and status of the Resistance's alleigance?

All the tutorials I have read assume that I know where to put the precious HTML. Well, I don't. Learning the HTML is no Big, but not knowing where to put it is making all my attempts to use it fail. Writing technical instructions is a hard job, I know. I used to write up procedures and detailed info on using specialized software suites at my old job, so people who knew nothing about computers could use the machinery the PC ran without needing to be a programmer.

 These tutorials I'm reading are great, they are full of useful info, but when somebody writes up these directions, they should remember to start with Step One: where to put all the information I'm about to give you :)

So it is a whole seperate file. Couple questions:

~ do I have to save it as an .HTML file, then?
~ if I don't, why when I have done this before, have I gotten errors like: "xxx.mission fault: "<" encountered instead of "+" "?? I know it is a parsing error :) but why? I'm suing the HTML tags exactly where I've been shown in a breifing template.
~what good is the 'breifing' tect field on the mission editor then? the one where you can change the weather, time, etc. Why is that text field there at all?? It doesn't seem to do anything.
~ let's start from the beginning. I want to make a breifing for my "Hike in the Hills" mission. OK, I make the new file, I'm assuming using Wordpad or the like. I drop it into my mission folder. Now I want the notes...do i put these in another new file, or do I use the breifing file?

Thanks :thumbsup:

Go to the Ed Depot and get hold of the Tutorial Mission in Getting Started.    Once you've had a look at that in windows explorer or something then your life will be a lot simpler.    At the risk of excessive self advertisement, I also commend to you macguba's guide to mission editing for beginners, which answers all the things that these other excellent tutes forget to tell you.

Anyway, to be more specific:

- Yes you save it as .html  (make sure its not .html.txt)

- OFP is a strange and tantalising mistress

- None at all.   Leave it blank.   (The Weather, time etc all work, and this is where you name the mission so that field is very important.)

- Write all the blurb (Plan and Notes) for your briefing in the correct place in the briefing.html file.    Copy the briefing.html from the Tutorial mission, just drop in your own text.

Edit:  gear selection is done via a (text) file called description.ext.     And yes, there is one for you to copy in the Tutorial mission.

Just open up a new Text File aND COPY AND PASTE THIS INTO IT.  tHEN SAVE IT AS BREIFING.HTML IN YOUR MISISONS FOLDER.  oPEN OF MISSION EDITOR, AND VIEW IT, AND YOU WILL GET THE BASIC IDEA OF IT.  thEN JUST OPEN IT UP WITH nOTE pAD, AND EDIT TO YOUR NEED.  thIS HAS LINKS .  Opps didn't relize caps were on, lol.  *To lazy to go back and re-write*  So hope this helps.

<h2><a name="intell">Intell Report</a></h2>
<p>
<br>
Intell in and around this area is scarce.  Due to heavy patrolling,
our forward observers have not been able to get near the A.O. un-detected
to gather intell.  We do know this:<br>
<br>
-There are numerous patrols guarding this coast.  Any where from 1 to 5
man patrols.  <br>
-There are also many armoured units in the area.  Ranging from BMP's to
T-72's. Try and stay clear of these as much as possible.<br>
-Any sign of trouble, it is highly likely that reinforcements may come from the
Russian-held airport. <br>
-Also, a little note, a Mi-24 Hind has been know to patrol your A.O. (Area of Operation)

<h2><a name="Echo">Target Echo</a></h2>
<p>
<br>
Target Echo is a small town/post on the western side of your Area of
Operation.  The capture of this could allow us to supply our troops with ease.
<br>
<br>
<b>Enemy Forces:</b><Br>
Enemy forces in the area are regulars.  We presume that they are armed with
AK-47's and smaller shoulder arm riffles.  As we said, intell on these targets
is un-availabe.  We advise you approach each target with extreme caution.<br>
<br>
<b>Enemy Armour:</b><br>
With the little intell we have, we have determined that there is no armour
around target Echo.  You can, however, exspect M2 50. caliber implacements, so beware.

<p>
<br>
Target <a href="Marker:June">June</a> is a small fuel and AA base 300km from the <a href="Marker:Airport">airport.</a>
<br>
<br>
<b>Enemy Forces:</b><Br>
This target is much more defended than target Echo.  There are two AA implacements,
consisting of two ZU-23's.  Soldiers protecting the area are presummed to be well trained, well equiped, and
combat ready.  Re-inforcements could come immediatly from the airport
if your team is detected.  Advise you engage these targets 100-150 meters
outside the target.
<br>
<br>
<b>Enemy Armour:</b><br>
Armour at this target is to be exspected.  We believe there will be anything from 1-5 tanks ranging from
BMP's to T-80's.  The armoured units will most likely be in or close to the compund, which should
give you the advantage.

<h2><a name="notes">Sugguestions</a></h2>
<p>
<br>
Notes:<br>
-Although your insertion is in a green land region, you are wearing desert BDU's because your Area of Operation is mainly desert.<br>
<br>
Sugguestions: <br>
-It is highly* recommended that the use of silenced weapons be deployed during this mission.  Patrols and re-inforcements may come to your area if they hear gun-fire of any sort.  <br>
-Keep in mind, that with silenced weapons, comes less range and accuracy witch may be needed in this mission.  It will limit your capabilities slightly.<Br>
-And always, be prepared.  From anti-air weapons to satchel charges, we recomend your team be fitted out with every weapon possible to make your mission a better succsess without complications.<br>
-One last thing, stay alive.<br>
