Player unit won't perform!
« on: 13 Mar 2003, 22:21:57 »
I've got to be doing (or not doing) something simple. Search is down so I've got to ask (at the price of sounding like a real newbie!)
Got the intro set up. No prob.
Got a cut scene that starts off the mission. That's a prob. I can't control the player!
Three man black-op team. Player is leader. Given a waypoint at the top of a hill overlooking a villa. Player should run to the waypoint, get down and crawl to the edge. Then he would look down at the town with binocs. (That's another problem, Can't get the binocular resource to display).
Anyway, Player just stands firm in his original position and ignores the waypoint. The other units move forward as they should. The player unit also ignores any control commands such as setbehaviour, setposition, goto, ect. All the commands I could use to get any other unit to perform. If the unit is not "player", all the controls work fine! I thought of having two sets of units, one for the cutsceen and one for the player, then play the old switcheroo. But that's so cumbersome and a really bastardized way to do it. I know there MUST be a better way.
I'm running the original game with Red Hammer. I know, I know, I'm way behind in the releases but my system balked when I loaded Resistance.
I'll by a better system later. Right now I could use a tip on what I'm doing wrong!

Calamity.

What about setpossing the player away, and setpossing a "standin" for him while in the cutscene?

Yeah,
That's the switcheroo that I was talking about. It's not very clean. Is there a better way?

No. The player will not move.  place the player somewhere far away and use AI units for the intro.

Yes, I recommend you black out and then black in so you doesnÂ't show the setpos.

Messy, Really Messy.
I haven't gone looking for one to check it out, But when someone scripts a cutsceen in the middle of a mission. do THEY get the player to move.
If so, how?
If not are they doing a SetPos switcheroo?
I have yet to do an In-Mission cutsceen my self, but every tutorial I've read leads me to believe that the players character is the one being manipulated. Is that right?

No they dont. The player will not ever move during a custscene.

Yep.

Nope.

If the player is just talking, then you could possibly use him for the cutscene, by setposing, doing an animation or two and using the "say" command to make him talk, but you cannot make a player actually move (as in run or walk somewhere). You can only make him do animations and talk.

If you need the player to run somewhere, set up a dummy on a small island and give the dummy the same indentity as the player. When it's time to do the cutscene, setpos the dummy in. Kinda like a stuntdouble.

I recommend you do this:

1. Create 2 GLs and name them
2. Create a stand-in blackop and name him.
3. Make 2 loops which will make so that the 2 GLs are beeing setpossed at the stand in and at the player.
4. Black in
5. Delete the loop
6. Setpos the player to the stand in GL.
7. ~0.01
8. Setpos the stand in to the player GL
9. Black out
10. Hurray! :D

Thanks for the info guys.
Gues that puts the nail in the coffin. I'll just have to do the switcheroo.
Oh the coding we go through to make the end user happy!
