grenade launcher smoke
« on: 08 Jul 2005, 21:31:15 »
could sombody make a particle for grenade launchers that just looks like a like smoke trail that follows a launched grenade for the first 5 or 6 meters of its flight, its kind of greyish in color and forms in a spiral from the spin of the grenade.

its really just gunpowder particles left stuck to the grenade that fall off as it goes forming the small trail

thanks

Hm, the spiral might be complicated; that's some complex rotation a grenade undergoes as it spins... pitch, yaw and roll...

Actually, wouldn't it just be roll?

You might well be right .... but roll with several axes of rotation?

Well, what I'm saying is that the grenade only spins around it's directional axis (like a plane doing barrel rolls). Just like a bullet, the only rotation it is given is the spin from the rifling in the launcher barrel. There might be some other rotation that occurs later on from gravity/wind, but not until much later, as it would have to overcome the spin from the rifling.

I thought of just dropping some cl_basic particals in a circle around the grenade, and just feather off as the grenade moves. I'd say about 20 particals in total, they're quite small.

Ok, here's the script. I'm not sure exactly how much dust comes of the grenade. Also, I want to be able to rotate it a bit around the back of the grenade, it only rotates x/y.

Thanks,

thats perfect  except the particles are a little to big, lthe rotation is perfect, but the trail is not much bigger than the with of the grenade. its maby about half a foot when it starts and gets a little wider as it disperses but i love the spin, i havent seen what it looks like with smaller particles but i dont think anything needs to be done to the spin

good work
thanks

here's v2, i think that it has a little less dispersion, but i can't seem to get the trail to be any shorter. Decreasing the life time of the drops seems to make it look a bit cutoff somewhere, but thats just my opinion
