I believe our colleague morglor9 was merely disputing the fact that "the
concept...[of] the Marlon Brando character...comes from" the experiences of
integrated SF personnel. If you compare the "Apocalypse Now" film and
the "Heart of Darkness" novella carefully and critically then you will see very
quickly that the Brando character of Col. Kurtz is very clearly based quite
closely and solely on the "Kurtz" character in "Heart of Darkness". In fact
all the characters and motifs in "Apocalypse" are taken firmly and
indisputably from Conrad's novella.
I do not know, but it is entirely possible that the author of "Apocalypse"
*was* aware of the stories of integrated SF personnel that you mention
and was inspired by them to make his interpretation of "Heart of Darkness".
If you feel so strongly about this I suggest you try to find out more about
the author's inspiration and motivation in producing "Apocalypse Now".
Both tales are a very powerful exploration of hypocrisy, ambiguity and moral
confusion and I admire the way that the author of "Apocalypse" adapted
Conrad's work into the Vietnam setting. The parallels between the two
background situations are astonishingly appropriate.
In any case, I believe your original question has been adequately answered
already. There is no "Kilgore" character available as an OFP model.
On another note; such a petulant and juvenile outburst as the one you
perpetrated above is most unseemly, to say nothing of the childish "ad
hominem"attack on morglor9 who, despite your assertion, in fact contributes
many constructive ideas to the forum.
