Helo control change
« on: 16 Oct 2004, 00:49:54 »
This is kinda more than your average scripting question, but I was wondering if there was a way to change the way input is handled for controlling helicopters.  I would prefer it if the pitch of the rotor was solely handled by the mouse and the rudder and collective were handled by the keyboard.  I dread to say like Battle Field Vietnam ( the rest of the game is horrible, don't worry I'm not one of "those" people).  I believe this is more like one would control a chopper in real life.  Any ideas?

I've tried looking around, but its such a specific request that it has made searching impossible :/

You can change the key mapping from the Options in-game.

Only to a certain degree unfortunately.  You can't change the mouse axis mappings at all and changing the rudder ( turn left and right ) to say A and D with mess up the strafing when you're using infantry.  I haven't been able to find an ascii key binding file either.

U did know that A and D will cause the chopper to strafe and the X and C buttons will cause the chopper to rotate?

Yes, if you read what I said very carefully I kinda said that I did.  My main question was regarding changing the mapping of the MOUSE input, but if someone knew they probably would have posted by now, so no worries.

My controls for choppers are:

Q.......collective up
Z........collective down
X........rudder left
C........rudder right

The mouse is used for pitch and turning

I imagine what you want is to remove the turning control from the mouse and have it handled exclusively by the keyboard.

I can't see any way of turning that off.......sorry   ::)

Actually on reflection you can disable the mouse controls for moving the chopper.

If you press the '*' on the Numpad it switches you to 'Free Look' mode.

You can then use the keyboard to move the chopper around instead of using the mouse.

Pressing '*' again toggles the mouse controls back on again.

In 'Free Look' mode you can look all around whilst flying the chopper with the keyboard or possibly even a joystick.

That's how I fly too, it's 'weird' at first, but much more fun and practical once you get the hang of it. Haven't tried it with joystick yet. I think in that case the view-pan function of the numpad would be the best match for heli's.

Userinfo.cfg doesn't have seperate entries for flight/vehicle control. I suppose some of it is handled via directinput blackmagics.

I know about the freelook mode, someone modifying the "directinput blackmagics" was kinda what I was looking for.

if you use freelook mode in conjunction with a joystick with a Z axis (torque axis bascially), and a throttle you have all of your controls separate but together on one console, and it is easy to operate.
