How does JOIN work?

According to the command ref, you should do
unit join group

so I have one pilot called hkp_pilot1 and another one called hkp_pilot2
in the init field of pilot1 it says hkp_group = group this

and at a certain waypoint I want the two pilot to combine forces, and follow pilot ones waypoints. so I type:

hkp_pilot2 join hkp_group

and it gives an error saying object, expecting array. now, surely I have done exactly what it says in the command ref, so what am I doing wrong?
