Tips to help get your question answered
« on: 08 Mar 2003, 15:11:45 »
Here are some tips to help you get the best out of the forums.

VFAQ  (very frequently asked questions)

Q.  How do I make fires burn?
A.  In the init field of the fire write this inflame true

Q.  I have a problem involving a helicopter.
A.  Helicopters can be difficult to use in OFP and this is a very common problem.    Read the helicopter tutorials and follow the tips given below.

Q.  How do I make a unit salute/put his hands behind his head/etc.?
A.   The commands you need are playMove and switchMove.    Look in the Unofficial Command Reference or search the forums for the animation names.

Q.  I have a patrol with MOVE and CYCLE waypoints.   How do I make them go to SEEK & DESTROY when the enemy is detected?     [Or, how do I call in an airstrike?]
A.   Look at this thread [or this one.]    Or search the forums, it comes up all the time.

(OFPEC old hands - is there anything else that should go in VFAQ?  I'm not going to put more than about five things here, otherwise it will start becoming just a FAQ, so I need the top five questions ... with a link to the answer of course.)

Before you post a question

OFPEC has over 150 tutorials, so there is good chance the answer to your problem is there.   You can browse the tutorials by category and sub-category.    There are also over 300 FAQs with a search function.  Not everything makes it into the FAQ, so search the forum too.

Always check both the Official Command Reference (downloadable versions here) and the Unofficial Commmand Reference Guide (especially the appendices)

If you are new to OFP mission editing go to First Steps and read OFPEC Guide: Making Missions by snYpir and Macguba's Guide to Mission Editing for Beginners.   The Tutorial Mission could prove useful too, it has example files (such as init.sqs, briefing.htm and description.ext) for you to copy.

The post itself

Post in the correct board - your question will be answered quicker.   If in doubt, post in Editing: General.   Do not post the same question in different boards.  Do not ask people to email the answer to you.

Give your thread a relevant and informative name like "Detecting you threw a smoke grenade".     Do not use names like "three questions" or "please help".

When you write your post, give all relevant details about your problem.   The more you tell us, the better chance we have of helping you.   If there is an error message involved, post it.   Say what you are trying to do, what you did, and what went wrong.

Use good English, and check your post for spelling.*   Although OFPEC is predominently an English language site, many (maybe even most) of the people who use it  - and may answer your question - are not native English speakers.

When your question has been answered, thank the people who helped you.   Click the green "Solve" button so that everybody knows the problem has been resolved.

Help

Remember that OFPEC is run by the community, for the community.   If OFPEC has helped you, then put something back.   You can:-

is there anything else that should go in VFAQ?

Maybe the everlasting hostage situations like "how do I get a unit to put his hands behind his head" and "how do I make a guy act like a prisoner" stuff  :)

Not all is lost.

 Good work there :o
 First 'Editing: General' sticky? :P

Ummmmmmmm

1. How to destroy bridges? Even I'm not sure on this one, but I have 1.46 so there ::)

2. How to put weapons on the floor.

These two just off the top of my head but there's loads more :)

Oh, and another tip: Use relevant topic names instead of, erm say:

     "Three Qs"

Or:

      "Need Help"

EDIT: I hate u macguba! By saying that u donÂ't like topics like 'help' and 'three Qs' youÂ've destroyed my career as The-Best-Member-Of-OFPEC-who-uses-the-most-idiotic-topic-names. ;D

It is a joke.    I hope he doesn't leave.      His style of English is unique, and valuable because it is idiosynchratic but relatively understandable.    I mean I don't want him to change.    I wrote it before I read/wrote the posts in the beta forum.

Dudes, thanks for your kind words and suggestions.   I've realised that we spend a lot of time answering the same questions over and over again.    Which nobody minds - we all know the frustration of being stuck - but I have to say I groan  when the answer is already on the first page of the board.
