Forcing tanks to use roads.
« on: 01 Jan 2005, 22:24:37 »
Do anyone know if there is a possible way to make tanks using roads as good as wheeled units do?

If I tell a truck to move from town A to town B, it will follow the road even when it bends heavily. However, if I tell a tank to do the same, it will just keep thrusting in a straight line.

So basicly, I want my tanks to drive civilized.
Anyone know how to do that (without adding tons of waypoints).

On the waypoint, set behaviour to "safe".

No, I am sorry but it doesn't help. It keeps mostly on the road, but it likes to take shortcuts throught the land.

Try placing more waypoints on the road. That may help  ;)

Well it works for me.

If you put a fresh waypoint for your tank and only touch the behaviour setting by putting it to safe I am quite sure your tank will drive on the road.

If there are enemies nearby, the tank won't behave like we want.

EDIT:

I don't see any point in giving more waypoints. I just tested this with one waypoint and it works. There's even a junction and the tank drives it somewhat right.

The amount of waypoints should be minimized. If you are going to make the tank drive a long way to it's destination, you would need a lot of additional waypoints to fix this, and it is still not guaranteed to keep on the road.

When there are enemies nearby, the tank will of course go crazy.

Your trucks will also take those little shortcuts, believe me. And imho, there's no point in making a complex script just to make the vehicles stay exactly on the road.

Hmmm, yeah allright.

It still seems like the trucks are more keen to keep to the roads. Well, I guess I just have to give up. I can't make any additional waypoints as I am using a script to randomly choose from a number of waypoints/towns.

Have you tried Careless mode?

The tank stays in safe mode no matter what and doesn't really care about enemies. That might work if you don't need it to engage anything.

Vehicles and roads are not the best mix, convoy's and vehicles are "difficult", the best thing to do is to move the waypoints around a bit to find the best result.

The thing is that I have not introduced enemies to the map yet. I am trying to get the occuping units to behave normally before I do
I prefer to have things in order before I apply chaos:)

Hey-

Take a look at this, it was posted at the official forums.  There is a script in the last thread for convoys.

http://www.flashpoint1985.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard311/ikonboard.cgi?s=29155e07c9a0fc0fd804957f48369586;act=ST;f=7;t=38050;hl=convoy+scripts

I haven't tried the script so no guarantees.
