Regarding VBS1
« on: 09 Nov 2004, 21:53:10 »
First post here but a long time viewer of OFPEC and other OPF community forums.

I have a question regarding the AI in VBS1. I find the original code in OPF to be seriously lacking both situation awareness and knowledge in basic combat tactics.

A simple example. AI attack patterns are pretty much straight forward, just like any arcade FPS. Even if you take out half a squad the AI keeps running into your line of fire. No suppressive fire when a unit is moving, no smoke, retreating or regrouping. AI seems to lack knowledge in how to use cover and obvious advantages in the terrain. There is no such thing as firing from cover. No support or tactics regarding indirect fire, mortar or artillery. Infantry cannot enter even the simplest of buildings or use walls and corners properly. More often then not the AI simply runs around in random patterns taking snapshots at targets the second its spotted, often with the entire group badly positioned and exposed to enemy fire. Don't get me started on the vehicle AI. It completely lacks any knowledge in armoured tactics or the use of formations.

I noticed some improvements when I upgraded to the GOTY edition, mostly around how the AI use grenades but that's about it. I guess some issues could be fixed with heavy scripting but then OPF would be like any other heavily scripted FPS game and not the open and dynamic virtual battlefield simulation that it claims to be.

Despite it's flaws it remained my favourite tool for creating military and tactical simulations for a long time. Today I rarely have time to play much but when I do I prefer racing simulations and Söldner online.

So the main question. Is VBS1 like OPF with prettier and more detailed models or have the actual AI been improved enough to make it worth the purchase?

I don't know much about VBS1 but it says on their website:

"The basic AI routines in VBS1 are the same as the AI in Operation Flashpoint 1. The difference is the new Scripting commands that allow for a significant improvement of the AI routines in various areas, by utilizing these new dynamic commands."

As for whether it's worth purchasing or not I don't know.

i'm not sure, but i thought this was pretty convincing:
for fastroping, the chopper flies in, unwinds ropes, lets them dangle(swaying or whatever), and them when they're finished the ropess are dropped to the ground in a lump

If they have enough time to spend on something like that, the AI had better be more intelligent than half the people playing  :gunman:   :joystick:

but i don't have vbs1 so i don't know

I have VBS1 and i must say i haven't really noticed but without any decent missions to show it off its hard to say. But since i bought it i spend more time converting missions over to VBS1. It is different but you can play flashpoint missions after de pbo ing a few files here and there, and merging a few files here and there and so on. Thanx to Snyper. There are no voice sounds in VBS as in OFP ie "Where are you!" etc but you can simply copy the one from OFP. VBS is almost identical. I just made a mission using the group link II script by keycat and it just shows what a great script can do for OFP or VBS1. I made it for both. At the end of the day its the guys who make such wonderful scripts that make us think the ai isn't dumb when in reality, we are. I recommend VBS1 to anyone who is seriously into this sort of stuff but for the casual gamer forget it. VBS1 rocks! Thats my oppinion anyway. There are plenty of good addons etc that keep OFP the best war sim out there bar none!

Sorry guys, we're not a support forum for VBS1 so we don't allow it's discussion here.

Try here: VBS Resources
