To Upgrade or not ??
« on: 28 Sep 2004, 19:18:39 »
I've got a LOT of addons and even more scripting.  If I upgrade from 1.85 will I lose most of that?  Is it possibly backwards compatible??

Most OFP upgrades are backwards compatible:   that is to say, if you upgrade to 1.96 almost everything that worked in 1.85 will still work fine.

There are very occasional exceptions to this rule.    However, there is nothing to stop you going back to 1.85 if you find things don't work.   (Although all the reinstalling etc would be tedious.)

I didn't think there was anything that wasn't "backwards compatable", except for pre-resistance addons. I don't see any reason why you wouldn't upgrade your version, because it only enhances the game, and lets you play on most online servers. But if you are really worried, you can download the 1.96 BETA patch from ofp.info, because it creates a separate exe for that version, and I think it has it's own installer.

AFAIK you need to be upgraded to 1.91 (Get it from the official site) to use the 1.96 Beta. The 1.85 -> 1.91 upgrade won't cause much of any change, then you can use the 1.96 Beta (Grab it here) and try it out. Not only does it add a seperate EXE (So you can run 1.91 if you wish), but it adds The Top-Secret Feature That Shall Not Be Named ;D .

It is questions like this - and some bad experiences I have had in the past - that is keeping me 'addon - free'.  My one exception was the editor upgrade needed for macguba's Un-impossible mission.

Yeah... I've had some interesting experiences due to badly written addons as well.

This is why mod folders are so good :)

I have noticed some missions perform differently under different versions, but it's fairly rare that an upgrade will 'break' a mission.

Unless you include a mission written in v1.20 being played in 1.96 :P ::)

AAaaugh!!!  I upgraded to 1.96 and now I get "cannot create 3D device" error.   Game won't load at all !!!!

I ran the Preferences and used AutoDetect, but that didn't help.

GGrrrrrr!   Should have stayed with 1.85 !

Any ideas?  I've got a brand new ATI Radeon 9600 card.

Have you used the -nomap switch in the Target field of your shortcut for OFP.

Should look something like:

C:\Games\OperationFlashpoint\FLASHPOINTRESISTANCE.EXE -nomap

Put this:
Code: [Select]
"C:\Program Files\Codemasters\OperationFlashpoint\FLASHPOINTRESISTANCE.EXE" -nomap
In your OFP shortcut's Target field.

There are some maps which won't work in 1.96, Devilchasers Operation Firelord being the main culprit (a heavy truck is to blame!!!).

Maybe you should copy all the scripts and addons to a seperate folder, reinstall ofp and then copy them all back into the correct folders again? If it doesnt work after the reinstall then chances are either ur ofp is messed or something is wrong with one of ur addons (compatibility issues i suspect) then it is a case of 'find the anomaly'

Thanks for the reply.  Second reference now to putting addons in folders.  I've got them all in my addons folder, period.   I often wondered if that would overload the memory or something.

What is your method?

It does put pressure on memory.   It is possible to create different shortcuts to OFP which start the game with different mod folders:  I don't use it myself so I don't know the details, but hunt around on mod folders.    This is a jolly handy system if you regularly play missions that use similar sets of addons, such as BAS, Vietnam or WWII.

The alternative I use is to keep the addons folder pretty clean and just drop stuff in when I need it.   I keep addons in subfolders in the addon directory, and copy rather than cut into the main addons folder.    So when I want to cleanup I can just delete everything, knowing its stored "in back" so to speak.  Very wasteful of course, but these modern computers have some much space its seems a shame not to use it.

The -nomap switch in your shortcut target field stops OFP from memory mapping all the addons in the addons folder.

In effect addons are loaded only when needed.

Use the -nomap switch and everything should work ok.......I hope.
