Boot camp formation and bushwacking.
« on: 09 Jul 2004, 02:35:40 »
Hey to all. Was working on my second mission (this one has combat in it!!!) and ran into a little snag. Any help would be appreciated.

First of all, I was wondering if there was any scripting means (I'm sure there is, but I really don't get that shtuff) to make say, 12 men to run with rifles slung in 4 rows of 3, like boot camp running formation?

Secondly (and prolly most importantly), I've almost gone bald from the hair I've ripped out from having my AI leader hiding under a bush in the middle of combat (and at 17, that's not a good look). Strange thing is, this is done by units which have the allowfleeing as 0. It's done by the "Take cover" command, but I know of no "allowtakecover" command. Lol.

Any solutions would be exceedingly valuable, considering I've had to write this freakin thing twice... goddamn CTRL button.

Cheers,

There was a formation builder out there, I forget what happened to it. ???

As for your second problem, what's the problem? Do you want the leader to NOT hide or stand up or what?

Maybe use different waypoints?
That's what the take cover command does, makes the unit go for anything that'll hide him, so....
officer setunitpos "UP"

use
officer setunitpos "AUTO"
to return to original state, and the guy is named officer

It'd help if you had more info present. :)

Pardon me. Yeah, I was a little obscure. The problem I have is that the AI units seem to be too... uh... wussy.

Whenever I try to create a simple attack scenario, basically, infantry vs light armour, I continually have my leader hiding under a bush and doing nothing, not moving, not shooting, kaput. I ask for a repetition of orders, and I get "TAKE COVER." This happens whenever the leader of my group spots anything tougher to kill than a human. It really screws up the mission, because you have to wait about 15 minutes (in 4x speed) for him to continue going along his waypoints.

Will the setunitpos command solve this? But I spose the question I'm really asking is how do I stop units from going to cover during an assault?

-EDIT- Got formation pack. Cheers, mate. (Thanks also to General Barron)

I suspect your leader is hiding under a bush because he is scared.   Give him a higher rank, more skill, more loons in his squad who also have more skill and have more anti-tank weapons and see if that makes any diffference.   (Reduce the opposition too.)   Assuming it does, take things away until you get the right balance.

OFP is a sophisticated game:  beating it over the head with a script is not always the best solution.

"How do I stop units from taking cover?" = "How do I bypass half of BIS's AI combat routines?"

setUnitPos up will just get him killed quickly:  one of the little flaws in OFP is that the difference in standing and lying is slightly too great in terms of how visible the unit is to opposing AI.

Thanks for the help, mate, I'll give it a whirl.

In real life I'd think that standing wouldn't make a soldier as vulnerable as OFP makes him out to be. Hell, in most squad based missions, you find that those who keep their feet are first to kark it.

Quite strange, anyway.

Yeah, I notice that my little problemo never happens in the BIS missions, so I'll give them a little peek. Hmmm, they always seem to take the armour out first anyway... I see...

Thanks, bruzzas!
