Map Screen Overlay.
« on: 05 Feb 2004, 20:01:20 »
Don't you just hate it when you're playing a night time mission with the lights out and you look at the map. Thwack! you go back to the game screen and you can't see poop. All because the Map is white and it's killed your night vision.

What I guess I'm trying to say is...
Is there a script out there for a map overlay in green or a darker colour?

A simply stunning bit of thinking. Unfortunatly after trying it out with all colours I found it to be too bright still. Any other ideas?

Can't other colors be used. Actually what would be great is a computer screen display pattern for the overlay.

Put down another marker, or maybe even 3 or 4. The more markers you put, the darker they will be as a whole. To make an area of the map too dark to read, it takes like 10-15 black markers, I think.

Wouldn't that cause lag when you scroll in the map screen?

I've played many maps with maybe 20-30+ markers on the map at once, and I've never noticed any lag with them.

Hmm, the idea of putting marker on top of marker unfortunatly does not work.  :'(
It seriously fades the actual map detail under a green haze and makes all the other markers dull. The actual brightness is also not really affected.
So the thread has been un-solved.

Did you try black markers? Also, you can force certain markers on top of others (so they wonÂ't be dulled) by placing them first (or last, IÂ'm not sure right now) in the editor.

Still no luck. I think this calls for a script.

You could use a screen shot of the map, zoomed out to cover the area of ops.  Dull it up using photoshop and then call it up in the game as a titlersc or cutrsc.  You would have to disable the in-game map.

If you think about, it would better simulate a paper map, which can't be zoomed like the in-game map.

Of course, you couldn't order units to go to map locations and there would be no updates to markers and the like.  You could have several map screen shots to show different parts of the map or updated objectives, then just call them up at the appropriate times.

More work but probably more realistic.
