Adding rivers, creeks and streams to OFP
« on: 16 Oct 2003, 07:36:38 »
Okay, here's an idea that should be easy to implement that would add HEAPS to the game.  And when I say "easy" I mean for anyone who has ever made an addon it should be REALLY easy, but for someone like me who has never made an addon in my life I mean IMPOSSIBLE !     :P :-\ ???

I noticed when placing large objects, such as two story buildings, that the game logic always places objects at a height equal to the MIDDLE of the object (whatever that means).  So if you place a two story building on a steep hill for example then half will be submerged (bad luck) and half will be floating in mid air (even worse luck).

So I thought - why not use this effect to create an addon that will simulate running water in creek beds ?  All you would have to do is create a dead simple wedge shaped block say 40m long, 20m wide and 3m metres high, tapering from 3m down to 0m over its length.

You then ensure that all textures except the top are clear, while the top has a pale blue sheen, streaked in white highlights (sparkly clear water).  If you could animate the top texture to sparkle etc that would be great but not essential.  Finally, you simply add a resident sound effect that plays continuously, just like the Fountain object.

Now, if all goes according to plan, when you place this object in the centre of a gulley, with the lower end facing downstream, then the object should appear on the map at the height of the centre of the object.  The upstream end will be suitably higher and the downstream end will be lower.  It may still "hang" in space, but if you place another overlapping block downstream then the effect should be of a continuous, gently rolling stream.

(If necessary you could design the wedge to curve down at the end to simplify alignment issues when place on the map.)

The sides of the object should sink below the adjacent gully banks making the whole thing seemless.  Because of this "blend" effect there would be no need for curves (like roads) - simply place each object end to end with a slight angle offset and the edges will take care of themselves.

You could make three different sizes of objects (rivers, streams, creeks), each with their own rise/run, texture (sparkly pale blue to muddy brown) and associated sound effects.

Of course this wouldn't be a perfect object - if the player went "underwater" (by going prone of whatever) he wouldn't necesarily drown (a good thing ?), and unless you added internal coloured bulkheads there would be no visibility problem underwater.  I'm sure that both of these problems could be simply fixed though.   :P

I have always thought that the OFP islands are missing two very major effects - waterways and clearly defined field boundaries.  Feld boundaries are easy to fix, I'm hoping that the above idea might make the waterworks idea easy too.    8)

Comments, suggestions, can be / can't be done ?

It's being done right now at the Nightstalker Mod, there will be a number of streams up in the mountains of the Colombia island (I'm building the island, I'd know ;D ). I could grab a pic of the stream out of the staff section if you want one.

Hi m21man

A screenshot would be great, thanks.  I'm just happy that my theory would work.   :D

One or two questions though - are your stream objects built the same way as I described or did you have to find some oher workaround ?  Finally - are your stream objects usable by other mission editors ?

I've seen a number of maps with "tidal" rivers - they all look great but they are all still stuck in two dimensions (no tumbling brooks etc) and are subject to changes in the tides changing their width etc.

I built my first road in OFP last week using standard road sections.  It took a lot of aligning and tweaking but the end result looked great.  I even added a village to my new intersection and some road signs, all in all very rewarding.   Being able to build my own streams as well would be heaven !   ;D

It's in its early stages, and there'll be a lot of these on the Colombia map, moving down from the mountains with drop command created waterfalls connecting each section. Here's a pic of the stream bed in early development.

Great work !  I forgot about the need for a stream bed, looks like you didn't though.   :)

Just a suggestion - try experimenting with a nearly opaqe surface colour for the creek .  I have absloutely no idea whether or not this will look (it might be complete crap) but whenever I travel interstate by air I'm always amazed by the colour of the creks and streams below the airplane - they all end up looking like very reflective brown ribbons !

That could just be Australian streams though !   :P

Good luck with the project !

I don't know about water color, I'll have to ask Pathfinder about that. He's the one making this model and its textures by the way. I'm just going to use it in the Colombia island that wil come with the Mod.

Please become a member of Nightstalker! Just sign in, we need more people participating in our forum. If you do join the forum, I might listen to suggestions/requests for the island.

good idea, rivers and stuff, i dunno why someone didn't make it before, well i can't wait for it on someone's island, how about a waterfall??? that might look cool, even if the water doesn't flow

Dry creekbeds would be pretty ace....good cover in a fire fight and key strategic posistions in some areas.......good for jungle maps

Dry creekbeds are easy, aren't they ?  All you have to do is build an island with some long and winding, shallow, steep sided channels and then texture the base in either pale sand or gravel.

I used to live in LA and go flying with my Dad out in the desert.  The gulleys there were all like that - some 2-3 metres deep and 5-10 metres wide, most just 1 metre deep and 2-3 metres wide.  The sdes were all nearly vertical so if the gulley was particlarly deep you had to find a cutting or "ford" to get out.

I used to play hide and seek with my friends among the cactus and gulleys - would have been LOTS more interesting with rifles and grenades !   :o

Cpl. Vagabond - Yes, the Colombia island (On my hard drive now ;D 8) ) will have a large number of small waterfalls on it, and there will probably be a larger one too.
