What the heck is "info age"???
« on: 13 Mar 2003, 08:05:58 »
I consider myself fairly decent at editing and scripting, but there is something I have never been able to figure out: what in the bloody heck is "info age" ??? You know: the little box under "control" in the edit unit screen of the editor. It has choices like "actual", "5 minutes", "1 hour", etc. What does this mean? I have never seen anything in any tutorial, board post, command reference, or ANYTHING that ever refers to this.

Can someone PLEASE tell me what this darn thing is?

Thanks! ;D

Say you have the gps enabled like in cadet mode. The info it gives you can be 'actual' (realtime), '1 minute' (with a 1 minute delay), '5 minutes' (with a 5 minute delay) and so on.

For example there's a rabbit hunt mission out there where you get the position of the rabbit, but with 1 minute delay.. so the rabbit can be anywhere within 1 minute range of the spot where the gps says he is.

umm.. it's just what it says it is :D the delay of the info  :D
Not all is lost.

Also, to add to Artak's description.
You know how you can spot an enemy vehicle or unit?
And it shows up bright red on the map?
Well, that is info age 0.
You know exactly where he is right now, and it's bright red on the map.
But if you lose sight of him, and one minute passes, the info age will be 1 minute old, and the bright red marker will have faded a little bit.
The higher the info age, the more faded the marker, the more uncertain the information.

edit
Practical applications can be if you simulate a recon-flyby or something in the beginning of the mission, telling the player where the enemy tanks are.
But from the recon to the actual start of the mission 5-10 minutes passes, yeah?
So you set the info age on those units to 5-10 minutes.

 ???

I've heard this before but it doesnt really work... If I make a mission with one west soldier (player) and one east soldier (with info age of 5 mins) and play it in cadet mode, when I look at the map I cannot see the east soldier.

Am I doing this correct? How do I properly apply the "Info Age" and where is the effect?

It might only work when the west unit knows about the east unit. IE you have to reveal him. Do you knowsabout  ;D

soldierOne reveal soldierTwo

where soldierTwo is revealed to soldierOne. Now soldierOne knowsAbout soldierTwo with the quantity of knowsAbout 4, yarrr.  ::) IE he knows where he is, who he is, what he is and his cats name. WITH the exception of the info age you set. I presume. I haven't tested, I am only theoretizising.

So try revealing initially all units you've set to have an info age. Also use
showGPS=1
in your description.ext to enable the gps. In the worst case scenario this doesn't help at all so I refuse to pay your money back.
