problem with 4+ tankgroup
« on: 01 Apr 2003, 00:35:55 »
Hi there,
i am trying to create a group of tanks larger then 4; but it doesnt seem to work.
What i've tried is to make a 12-men player group each assigned as commander in a empty tank; using:  this moveincommander tankname
the made 12 2-men groups all individually assigned to the tanks using moveindriver and moveingunner to all the named tanks. I can issue orders and have a command view, but the commandbar is empty and its hard to get your tank, let alone the whole formation to move.

Ive tried searching and found the above described method but thats all...

Anybody got a suggestion?

Why dont you just have 3 12-man squads each with 4 tanks and give them the same waypoints and sync all coresponding waypoints. So the other tanks will go to a waypoint but wont go to the next untill you get there. This should acomplish what you want to achieve.

What you tried is unlikely to work well, since there is no obvious way for the commander of one of your tanks to give orders to his driver.   You could try having the drivers in your group rather than the commanders, I have no idea what would happen.

You might need the Chain of Command engine - see the link in the Ed Depot.    It's a mod specifically designed for commanding other groups, which is essentially what you are trying to do.

If you have Resistance, what you've described happens in one of the campaign missions .... remember defending the town by the sea against that big armoured attack from the south?    un-pbo the mission and see how BIS did it.

Another possibility is just to use a follow script.    Get the commanders of the other groups to follow you, or a point offset from you.  (Set an invisible marker 100m to your left and another 100m to your right:   get a group to follow each marker)

Depending on circumstances you might solve the problem with infinite reinforcements:  every time one of your tanks is lost, a new one comes out from behind the hill and joins you.
Plenty of reviewed ArmA missions for you to play

Interesting...

I remember, seeing it ages ago when OFP was still a demo, 12 tanks, only the commander showing up in twelve tank icons. Also the driver seems to respond pretty good to left and right commands and ignoring the forward and backward. When any out of the 12 commanders gets a map clicked move order, they will go there. (again, there is a commandbar, empty) Apparantly the commander is still able to issue the move order to the driver.

I'll try and find another way

thanx,
