Snipers don`t fire at long ranges
« on: 09 Aug 2006, 00:52:31 »
When I use a sniper in my mission he doesn`t fire at a long range. when I`m a sniper and I zoom in I can take out soldiers at very big distances. but the sniper doesn`t do that. Is there a script for let the sniper shoot at very long ranges. I hope you can help me.

Well, there's a number of things you can do. I've probably forgotten most of it because I haven't been scripting for well over a year.

1) Max the skill of the sniper.
2) Add binoculars to the sniper.
3) Reveal the targets. Check out the command reveal in the ComRef.
4) Use spotters in the same group as the sniper. If you're really nasty you can have the spotter(s) someplace entirely different, like closer to the target than the sniper. Just make sure he isn't detected.
5) Put the sniper on a guard waypoint. I have no fecking idea if that helps, but OFP AI is at it's best when on a guard WP. ;D

Snipers can and do fire at long ranges.     Armsty's tips will help.     However, sometimes you just need to wait.    If the target is moving around constantly in sight of the sniper, the sniper will eventually figure out that he has a target and fire.

Check that the sniper's view is not obscured.   Try various terrain detail and quality settings, they might be having an impact.
Plenty of reviewed ArmA missions for you to play

Number four from dmakatra's tips is a very good one, I think. Because it is pretty effective! Be carefull, you can make very hard missions with snipers and these tips  ;D I know that from getting killed many, many times (too many) while testing a mission of my own.

BTW it does don't work it also depends on the weapon the AI is using. Some addons allow for the AI to fire at longer ranges and more often.

Why keep those threads then? Thought it was a board where people like to add on to information (i.e. references) instead of having a thousand of the same.
