Creating Tutorials?
« on: 29 Sep 2005, 00:00:48 »
MY OFP Designing team and I want to create new and improved tutorials on mission editing. My first tutorial I would like advice on is "UNITS."

If you wish to reply, and give advice, please reply with what you know, and what you know needs to be covered in a tutorial if you were to write one, assuming that the person who will read it, knows nothing about Operation Flashpoint Mission Editng. If you could post all topics that need to be covered that would be awesome. Thanks OFP Community.

I think you should give detail on the skill level. How it affects whether they'll fight or flee. Even the simple stuff like what'll show up in the group menu in the briefing, Veteran, Expert etc. Perhaps a note that really only Special forces should be put on expert and how you can have a squad of mixed abilities by having different skill levels set.

That's my idea. I've hundreds more, like details on Soldiers, Armour, Aircraft, Maritime etc.

I think it would be really helpful if someone would explain just what is possible for everything in the editor.

What all can be done with waypoints? Examples of how to use waypoints when using AI infantry and AI vehicles.

What triggers can do and give several examples (as I have no idea really).

What does synchronization do and how do you use it?

Just imagine me trying to make missions when I have no idea what I'm doing  ;D

Mainly step by step explanations of what has to be in initialization fields for instance and just which parts of a script or whatever could be changed for a different outcome. I'm sure I'm not the only one that isnt a programmer or knows code from my ass. I must say it is fascinating but a lot of what I see by way of explanations seem to assume at least a basic knowledge of many of the techniques that are used that someone like myself is completely ignorant of.

Mizilus there are several tutorials in the Editors Depot - Tutorials - Getting Started which cover exactly what you are talking about.   ;)

If you want to learn/revise 'from the ground up' start with macguba's guide to mission editing for beginners and snYpir's OFPEC Guide: Making Missions.

The Tutorial Mission has working examples of all the things you mention.
Plenty of reviewed ArmA missions for you to play

I have all of that stuff saved to a file. I refer to it constantly and it has helped me greatly. Thus far I have been able to find or figure out approximately half of what I'm trying to accomplish. Again, though the tutorials are excellent (mostly), they do seem to assume a certain knowledge. They may describe something like, "once you place the tank then set waypoints (blah blah blah). Once that is done synchronize a trigger with it that does (XXX)."

Well I dont know jack about synchronization or triggers. It's really disappointing that BIS didnt include  a "Mission editor for dummies" instruction guide. I have plenty of knowledge about military hardware and tactics and such and VERY little when it comes to computers, scripting, and all that.

And thats not all really. The instruction manual that came with the game is prety vague as well. The whole "Team" command for instance. Can I split my group in two and place half of it in another (AI) units control?

Its one of those learn something every day kind of deals. I really hope Nightjay and co. make these tutorials. I for one can never have too much info.

Well thats how we all did it back when OFP was new, and we had no problems figuring it out on our own.
