Helicopter Attack/Strafing Run
« on: 10 Jan 2005, 15:29:49 »
I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to make helicopters do strafing runs with their rockets on a strip of land, rather than just attacking individual targets. Does anyone know how I might do this?

I belive there are many heli attack scripts in the ed department, and if they dont meet your needs exctly you could edit them until they do.

There are probably ways to script that, but I've found that choppers do that anyway if you line up targets on their approach and just give them a straight waypoint.

I've tried creating an object (invisable helipad).  With no scripts involved, I tasked an apache to attack it in a trigger using a GetPos then DoTarget followed by a DoFire command.  Nothing happened.  The aircraft simply hovered over it ???.

What is the proper command sequence for this?

Since helipads are not an enemy to the chopper it will not shoot at it.  Instead use the invisible targets addon (it is in the addons depot).  There are four kinds, one is an IR target (so it will be treatrd as an air threat by AI), one is Armor target (it will be treated as an armor threat), One is a laser target (so an A10 with an LBG bomb will attack that), and the last one is like a man, so that will be attacked the same way infantry units are engage (a helo with rockets will use rockets, otherwise it will use the mounted chain gun (Hind, Apache, Super Cobra).  All four invisible targets have sides for East, West, Civilian, and Resistance.  If you want to camcreate or creatVehicle the targets here are there names:

"LesIETA": Invisible Target Man, East
"LesIWTA": Invisible Target Man, West
"LesIGTA": Invisible Target Man, Resistance
"LesICTA": Invisible Target Man, Civilian
"LesIAETA": Invisible Target Armored East,
"LesIAWTA": Invisible Target Armored West
"LesIAGTA": Invisible Target Armored Resistance
"LesIACTA": Invisible Target Armored Civilian
"LesIIETA": Invisible Target IR East
"LesIIWTA": Invisible Target IR West
"LesIIGTA": Invisible Target IR Resistance
"LesIICTA": Invisible Target IR Civilian
"LesILETA": Invisible Target Laser East
"LesILWTA": Invisible Target Laser West
"LesILGTA": Invisible Target Laser Resistance
"LesILCTA": Invisible Target Laser Civilian

You may grab the addon from this topic as I use it in my AA & ATG Fire scripts. You could even use a bit if ingenuity and modify my script to suit your purpose.

hmm, with these addons though, does this mean that if we release a mission using them then the user of the mision needs to downlaod them too>?can they be contained in the pbo file?

If a mission uses an addon then anybody who wants to play that mission must have the addon in their addons folder.

If the addon is small, it can be included in the mission download zip file.   Remember to give installation instructions.    If the addon is large, then the mission readme should include a precise and accurage url where the addon can be downloaded.   It is good practice to include in the readme as many details about the addon as you can, so that if the link fails in the future the addon can still be tracked down.

What is "small" and what is "large"?    In general I would say less than 50k is small and more than 0.5meg is large, but its a moveable feast and depends partly on the size of the mission.    Most addons are large.
Plenty of reviewed ArmA missions for you to play

Having done a script like Wadi's and having used the invisible target addon, I remember it as a very small file, something like 1.5 kb zipped, so it can't take more than 1 min to download that alone. ;)
