Bugs in the mission
« on: 28 Dec 2004, 00:25:13 »
 >:( OK, I read the Mission Editor. I carefully modified one of the original missions Operation Flashpoint. It worked! Encouraged by this I spent about 20 hours modifying two other missions, and creating one. They seemed to run perfectly, from the system I created them on. So off I went, burned disc in hand, to load them on the server in the group (physical location) I play and run LAN parties at every week. Lo and behold, nothing worked at all. I could go in and start a game, but three of the systems refused to recognize the version ( all 6 were upgraded to the same version) and two systems would brig up the map, and even allow charachter selection. Then they froze up completely.
We tried everything, including complete removal from all six systems, complete re-install, and upgrade, then re-installation of the modified game. Nada. I went back and tried a simpler mod; I took one mission ( the one where you are dropped in a forest and have to take out 3 Spetznatz officers by a certain time, forgot the name) and only changed it so 6 people could choose types to play. No added patrols, none of the other things I had added or modified. Same problem, it just hung on downloading the map, or gave a version error..... very frustrating. Can any one shed some light here? Does anyone want me to send them a disc so they can fix what ever I missed, as I am at my wits end? I would gladly pay!

The missions you are trying..........they are MP missions aren't they?

If so, when you altered them did you export from the mission editor as MP Mission?

when you save to a cd it becomes "read only" so the game is unable to access it, you have to change that in the missions properties

Both missions are single player originally, but I modified them and saved them as multiplayer. I did not know about the problem of it saving as a "read only" and having to go back and change properties....... pffft. I assume the same problem would occur if I emailed it from my system to the system that we run as a server.

Arrgghhhhh. So, are either of you interested in having me send you a CD, so you can de-bug? Mission editors that don't have clear documentation make me nuts. Shadowmagic is worse; you get half the stuff explained clearly. It's all the rest you can't get figured out.... "why are the dragons showing up on turn one? Why are the allied Dragons attacking me! Why are all the AI killing everything in sight, and razing every resource? What does guard area actually mean?"

emailing should work fine

the reason it becomes read-only when you put it on a cd is that you can't edit anything thats on a cd, cuz you can't re-write the cd (unless its a cdrw, but i don't think it works with those either) so it has nothing to do with OFP

email it to me, at ss_deathrow@hotmail.com or post it as an attached file.

A quick fix to try: Go into the folder where the mission's source files are saved, back it up, and now delete everything but mission.sqm. Then, load the mission file into your editor. Save it, reload it, then save it as an MP mission and see if it works. If that works, the problem is the other files, not your mission.

What I'd recommend is to check through the mission, strip all the triggers and rebuild them (hopefully you haven't got as many triggers in your map as I do in mine).

thats not necessary.
just go into the properties of your files in the mission folder and change them to being not read-only

cool, I'll try the fix this weekend on the server itself. Of course that means I will also have to re-load and update on 8 systems..... guess I know what I'm doing Saturday morning! If none of the fixes work, I'l e-mail it. Thanks for the help, and happy hunting! Watch out for the .50 caliber shrubbery! Yeah, I run snipers. Low points score, but I only get killed if the tanks open up on my location. Seems I forget to take down the red flag with the arrow on it that pops up each time I fire "Hey, Sniper here!" BF1942 and Joint Ops seem to have the same feature..... hmmm... :)
