Whats wrong with my Briefing?
« on: 28 Apr 2004, 00:22:17 »
Hi guys.

I have recently made a Briefing for a new mission I am making. Though whilst testing it on my new mission I have encountered a problem. Whilst paying only a few words from the notes appear and the rest of the Briefing fails to show up. This is what my Briefing says:

June 14th 1994: Well I have finally arrived with my unit after some well earned R&R. But no sooner that we reported back in, were now being told that we are being shipped back out again. This time to some place called Everon, God knows where that place is... I can't even find it on the Map...
But from what I have heard, its pretty grim over there. A classic example of the Local Government being out of touch with the majority of their people. Seems that extremists are starting to Rebel and are quickly outnumbering local Government Security Forces, and thats where we are to come in. About 2 days ago HQ got a call from the Everon Republican Govt' (ERG) saving that they have reports that a Small, but adequately armed Army is massing in a Small Island on the West coast of Everon and they are almsot certain that they will mass some sort of Attack on certain Economic soft spots of the Island. I.e: Ports, Airfields, Militia Bases, Industry, etc, very soon, in an effort to cripple the Country. Today, we got a call that the Islands Airport was attacked and quickly overwhelmed the Local Police, Though Govt' Forces have managed to Corner them... Were shipping out today, along with a Carrier Battle Group. Should we need any Additional Support... Just who the Hell are we going up against here!?

<br><br>
Today, the Everon Republican Government Defence Forces (ERGDF) was attacked by an unknown Rebel Force. Their estimated numbers being within 30-40 or more Infantry Soldiers, and One Armoured Fighting Vehicle (Ex-Soviet BMP). This has given them the edge being that the ERG have little Armoured Vehicles of their own, as well as having insufficiently trained operators to use them. (1x T-72 MBT, 1xBMP, 5xBRDM-ERG Police Force)
The enemy has been said to have complete control of the Airport and are continuing to demolish as much of it as possible. Spotters report a Radar Tower has already been destroyed, and the enemy are pending for more Explosives to finish the job.
Our job has now become more difficult as ERG forces have pulled back due to Gorilla-style ambushes on Roadblocks near the Airport and at a <a href="marker:m11">Local Militia Outpost</a> nearby has also been abandoned, leaving a fully operational T-72 MBT and BMP IFV (the only Armoured Vehicles in the ERG Arsenal) for the Rebels to use, aswell as Small arms, vehicles and AA weapons. We are to clear the area of all Rebels thus restoring power back to the Local Govt...
One more thing that does not rate highly in our favour is that a Spearhead Platoon of Rangers, Inserted last night, have failed to Report in and the MH-47E Helicopter transporting them has failed to return to base. This has prompted the attack to be abandoned and to atempt to rescue the downed squad but the Mission so far remains...
One thing in our favour though is the support of a Carrier battle group patroling this reigion. (Including the Carrier <a href="marker:m4">USS Nimitz</a>) They have offered us Close Air Support (CAS) for our landing and for destroyong the Armour in the reigion . These can be radioed in but pressing: (0-0-1). You will also have a specialist Weapons squad on Standby should you need them, which will be dropped in by Blackhawk at a Designated LZ (Subject to Pilot Disgression). (0-0-2) Note: Make sure you have at least 4 free spaces in your squad before calling these additional units in...

May I suggest the easiest way to do briefings? Get Chris's OFP Script editor. You can make briefings too easily and save them easy. Any other program like this will probably do the job.

It's in ed depot. Make a search.

Wizards are great. Really. But you should never fully trust them. It's allways better to finnish and make the final touches by "hand". IMO.

Hell yes!

Its neatly laid out with notes you write up top with a preview screen to the right so you can view your writing in mission form. Same with plans. Then you type in stuff for objective 1 2 3 4 5 and ending 1 2 3 4 5. I think it makes multiple sided briefings and links too, but not sure how to use links effectively.

I don't know its worked great for me Armstrong, no problems,  yet.... :hmm:

Suggestions:

1) When you do a briefing "by hand", proceed by iterations ... one baby step at a time: you change something, you test it. So if it breaks, you won't spend hours wondering what's wrong.  ;)

2) Take a look at Sui' Facile Ground single player mission to have an example of an Advanced briefing. Focus on the HTML syntax.

3) It's HTML but ... Flashpoint IS the interpreter meaning that certain rules must be followed. For example, objective(s) have to be separeted with <hr> tags (one for each obj.) etc.

4) If you're not too sure on HOW to do it, start with a Template, and once again proceed step by step: you'll make mistakes, but they'll be easy to fix ... and you'll learn a lot  ;)

Carry on soldier!

Odd how some people still write briefings and overviews by hand... Chris's Brilliant OFP script editor allows you to write any kind of script, briefing or overview for OFP, you can hyperlink in the briefings, put a pic in your overview, anything... You can even put together costum soldiers, and costum ammo crates.

hmm - i've never been using a briefing generator yet, and
i've never been in the need to write a briefing from scratch

All i did was: using an already working briefing (everyone
can find one when creating a map with the mission editing
wizard) and voilla. Then just change what you want and it'll
be working fine. Even more in combination with the briefing
tutorial i could learn how to do it without having had to ask
anybody else.

OK, there's no reason for ppl not to use a briefing generator,
but fact is that such a tool will only prevent you from learning
by experience.

~S~ CD
Dont argue with idiots....they will bring you down to their level and beat you there with experience.

Greetings,

The trouble with briefing generators, is that they will let you build a BIS style briefing, but they won't build your advanced/ realistic briefing (with seperate pages for detailed orders, intel, comms etc.). That, as armstrong said, has to be done manually, afterwards.

OK, having said that, it would be a little silly to write the whole briefing by hand when you can use a generator/ template for the basic stuff (plan, notes, endings). Nevertheless, I wrote most of the Combined Arms 1 briefing from scratch (albeit based on a template), because of all the extra stuff I needed.

But anyway: Chris' OFP Script Editor is a very good place to start.

Hi guys.

I seem to have stumbled onto a new problem. What has happened is that I written up my extra page named "Situation" and I have put a new page under it called "intel". I have separated them with <hr> and all but for some reason the "Intel" page is still moulded with the "Situation" page. Meaning at the end of the Situation page the Intel pages acrries on underneath. I have tried dePbo'ing some Brieifings which have these extra pages but they have all done the same thing and they don't seem to have a problem with them. It is just mine...

Ill show you what I have written in ma txt file.

Something I learned today is not to use an & sign in the briefing or it will screw everything up.  not sure if anyone else saw this before.

Briefings are very temperamental.   The general exerience is to get a plain one that works (for example from the Tutorial Mission) and then drop in your own text.    Working through a Briefing trying to find the error - particularly since it can be something deeply unobvious - is tedious stuff.

If you have submitted your mission to the Mission Depot, and then you identify a problem with it, make a note to that effect.   You may even be able to update it, I can't remember exactly what you can and can't do to things you have submitted.     If you do nothing you'll get marked down for it when the mission is reviewed.    Plus it saves the reviewers from playing a mission with a simple, fixable fault.
Plenty of reviewed ArmA missions for you to play
