The Ultimate Medevac Script
« on: 20 Oct 2003, 23:34:49 »
Imagine this scenario
You and a group of Deltas have infiltrated a huge city on Tonal. As you move through the dusty streets a sniper shoots one of your men, he goes down, you open fire and take care of the bastard that got your friend. You look over and your teamate is rolling around in pain. You radioman calls medevac.
The blackhawk flies in landing on a red smoke grenade. The dust and the red cloud covers the view of the injured delta being dragged aboard the blackhawk and then airlifted to safety. You fight on, while your friend goes home, rather than lying dead in the middle of nowhere
This is what i want to happen with OFP and im sure u do to
So heres the plan

Lets make the best godamn medevac script anyone has ever made, heres how it shud work
- The unit is shot, the getdammage command is used to see how injured he is
- The unit performs the switchmove of the healing animation (i forget wat its called)
- The radioman performs a telephone animation *not necessary*
- As the chopper comes in it cuts to a cutscene of the situation (only happens if the area is clear)
- You see the unit being "dragged" onto the chopper and it flies off
- As it leaves it changes back to the game, the unit is removed from your group and you can continue fighting

How about it??
I know that some of the things are impossible in OFP, but we can work around it, cover things up etc
If u want to help post your ideas here
Safety  :)

The way that OFP choppers handle urban terrain would make this worthless inside a city. It's quite possible to do out in the countryside, but probably only the player could use the smoke grenades to mark the area (Imagine what would happen if an AI put a smoke grenade next to a tree :P .

Note - It is possible to have OFP choppers land in urban terrain, but it takes a lot of tweaking. You could make mission specific scripts that allow the medevac choppers to land in the urban area that you're operating in, but it would be impractical in a universal script, unless you felt like defining every good landing spot in the cities/jungles.

Mostly no choppers are used for medevac in cities why dont use vehicles ....

Or you must find a place in the city where the chopper can land... but then your soldier friend must be shot exactly on that spot (it is possible I know).

If you can't beat them, buy them

There are many places the chopper can land
It would be defined by an invisible H, possible in a road, so there are set places it can land
if it cant land, let it hover, this is possible i know it
as for the smoke grenade the player would through it, or it would appear where there was space for the chopper to land - the 2nd option there being the most likely

The problem with all this talk of invisible Hs is that the OFP AI will cause the chopper to slam into a building as the chopper tries to land at the medevac point. A more reliable method for medevac would be an improved ability to call an M113 Ambulance to your position.

OK
The chopper slamming into buildings is indeed a problem
But y not script it in the cutscene so that it comes in from a direction from which this wont happen
The M113 idea is nice  :D

If this was only for a cutscene, it would be easy. If it's in a mission, then it's very difficult. I don't know if there's an efficient way to check for buildings and make choppers avoid them. You can check the terrain height ahead of the chopper, though.

Talking about Choppers, medevacs and Safety's idea on getting the choppers to land/hover in a street.

Wouldnt it be more beneficial to convert a BAS LittelBird (with permission) into a LittleBird with Med properties, or the interior design of the LittleBird tweaked a little to allow room for men to site inside like in a BlackHawk (but a smaller version) ??? It could be called a BiggerBird  ;D For my sake in copyrighting my BiggerBird idea for when i start on addon making..

What you think Safety ?

Hrm i dont know about making a new addon
but if we used BAS stuff we cud make the thing hover and use the ladder evac script, then it would not matter if it landed in a city or countryside
we'll have to find some way of doing it  :D

If you did this script for one specific mission, then you could define areas that could be landed in with markers and that choppers could effectively use when landing. After all, if one of your men is so badly wounded that he requires medevac, he isn't going to be in condition to climb up a swinging rope ladder into a hovering chopper.

Good idea ;D The markers would have to be made invisible/hidden so the map screen would not be cluttered during Briefing..

What about using a marker that can be moved to specify the landing zone ? Like in numerous artillery scipts and SnYpirs SP/MP Support Pack ?

Hence by previous idea of converting a BAS LittleBird with Medevac properties ;D

I like the idea, using markers wud mean the chopper wud choose the nearest LZ to your position, kinda makes it realistic  :D
I'm guna have a go at this 2nite
