Need newbie advice. HELP!
« on: 14 Jul 2003, 20:09:18 »
I am brand new to these boards and have just started messing around with addons. Would somebody please tell me what I am doing wrong here.

I understand perfectly how to download the files, extract them and put them in the proper directory, that being "Add Ons". How come I am not finding them when I fire up the game. I have re-started my PC and have been troubleshooting every other possible angle. By the way, I am running version 1.46

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You have to create a mission and place the addons in the mission. If they are not showing up in the mission editor you must make sure the addons are not located in any sub folders in your addons folder.

Actually the ones I downloaded are for the correct version. I think the problem might be in the extraction process. Windows keeps asking me for a password before it extracts the files so I created one then it hits me with another prompt asking if I want to overwrite this file: Yes or No? Either way I answer, the files still never make it to the addon folder.

What am I doing wrong?

Password??? I've never come across password protected addons, maybe you should try to download files again (file maybe corrupted) or try another download site.

maybe you have some kind of weird extraction program which needs a password.
or maybe you can try just copying the pbo's then paste them in the addon folder.

second question; what format are the addons (rar, zip ect).
third; what program do you use to unpack them.

try to DL other programs like Winzip and WinRar.
These don't ask for a password (although my winrar version asks me to register for a year now ;D)

Are you trying to unpack the .pbo files (stupid question, but since you're new..)?; don't! they are supposed to stay in pbo format to work. Put them in the /addons folder or /res/addons folder. (shouldn't make a difference for most addons)

try to DL a really old addon from www.ofp.info and see if you can get that one to work.

last tip; buy resistance, dude. Trust me; you'll love it and it gives you the ability to play the best addons.

Well I tried WinRar and WinZip and both have the same results as my Windows extractor. I keep getting the ACCESS DENIED error everytime I try to extract the files to my AddOns folder. Is there possibly something I need to reset. I mean how hard can this be, I just cannot seem to get the files in the folder.

Very frustrating. Any advice?????????

why don't you try and extract the addons on your desktop (or someplace alse) and then copy them to your addons folder.

I really don't know what's wrong with your rig, man :help:

If it's an ACCESS DENIED error, then the files or folder are being accessed by another program. Have you ever tried to delete an mp3 or something while it is loaded in a music program? You get an access denied error because the program is using it at the time. You aren't running OFP when your trying to install the addons are you? That could cause your problem.

You don't get 'Access Denied' on folders unless a specific program (ie: WinGuard, not OFP) has locked it or if you're using an NTFS-formatted drive and have set security options available for that file-system.

A normal 'Windows' Access Denied error only occurrs on files in use by the system, as stated by Parker, but even running OFP while inserting addons won't cause it when putting files into the Addons folder as the new files simply remain there unused until the next time OFP loads.

Also, the prompt to overwrite the file means that the addon file of an identical name is already present in the folder you're trying to place it in.

The problem with lie within your own system security settings and/or a problem within Windows.

Unfortunately, OFPEC is purely editing-focussed, so we're not big on becoming a full-on tech support forum ... if anyone wants to further assist Firefly, please drop them a line via IM or email and go from there.
