REPLACING standard BIS units/skins etc...
« on: 14 Mar 2003, 03:27:22 »
Hi everyone.

Is it possible to replace standard BIS vehicles/weapons with other fanmade versions so that they can be used in the singleplayer campaigns?  I would love to have a higher resolution M1 Abrams skin, or just any more realistic models/skins that fans have made, and put them in the game.

I recently came across the wonderful AK47-CS addon which is a more detailed and vasly superior skinned than the standard BIS version and was hoping to replace the BIS AK74 and AK47 with it.  However, I soon realized that it was not simply a matter of de-PBOing the files from the addon and the data3d.pbo and swapping the files.  The AK47-CS had many more and different files...

Are any of you familiar with this AK47-CS addon, and/or would you have any suggestions on how I might be able to replace the standard AK with this new one?  Ive already tried to find a way to contact the maker of the AK47-CS addon, but failed, there wasnt any info in the txt file included with the addon.

You can download the AK47-CS addon here:

Thanks for reading, and hope someone out there can help:)

Wow :wow:! That gun was really nice!

However, I think you can get more help in the addons board.

No no, you're right here i think:

If i got you right, you just want to replace the original
units/weapons being used in the campaigns by addon units/weapons.

To do that, you need to de-pbo the campaign and modify
the missions.

btw - this has already been done with the winter addons and
the jungle addons if remember right.

I think if you De-PBOed the Data and Data 3D files and replaced the original .p3d, paa and pacs with your files. But kept the same file names i think it would work. Because you use the same file names, the game will think its using the BIS models and textures.

Then if you PBO the De-PBOed Data and Data 3D files into PBO files, and overwrite the originals.

Warning
This may or may not activate fade because you have edited the game files, but im not fully sure what activates fade, so it might not.

If it does, don't blame me, but if i was trying to do what you want, thats what i would do.

Thanks for the replies guys, and my apologies if I initially posted this thread in the wrong forum;)

Swordfish, yes I had the same line of thinking as you, and dePBO'd the files, but there is no easy match between the BIS paa/pac/p3d files and the AK47CS files.  There are different numbers of these filetypes so its not a 1-to-1 swap if you know what I mean.

Im sure there must be a way of doing it, but I just dont have the knowledge/experience with OFP editting.  Guess I was just hoping to jump in here and have someone give me the answer in the click of a finger lol ;)

Any other suggestions would be most appreciated!

Thanks,

BAM:)

you dont need to replace the texture files, just make sure you have the addon in your addon folder, only replace the P3d, you may want to replace the AK-74 though, mainly because its used a hell of a lot more, a quick edit in the config.bin can easily change the name to AKM

AK files:

AK-47 = AK_47_proxy.p3d
Czech AK-47 copy =  AK_47_v58_proxy.p3d
AK-74 = AK_74_proxy.p3d

hmm - apologies if i've been wrong with my first assumption,
that you just want to play the campaign with addon units.
Therefore i said you were right in the editing section.

If you really want to change the units hardcoded, then i think
you could run into serious problems when joining a multiplayer
game.

If you don't play mp, then you don't need to care about it,
unless you want to patch your game to a higher version
(as 1.91 is a beta patch, i wouldn't wonder if there will
come a next patch - maybe sometimes).

However, the method i posted above doesn't alter the game
itself, you just need to change the maps and create a new
campaign. (wouldn't that be easier?   ;D)
Using this way wouldn't cause any problems like fade or
multiplayer joining for sure.

The way i mentioned works in mp, works in the campaign and doesnt activate fade...

Ok, so it can be done great.   Let me get this straight though, do I just make 3 copies of the AK47CS.p3d file then rename them to the names of the 3 AK files you listed above, then replace the original BIS AK files of this name in the Data3D.pbo with the AK47CS renamed ones?

You mentioned something about editting the config.bin, do I have to edit anything in order to get these to work?

Yes, im stupid and totally new to doing this, so I hope you can forgive me for my continued questioning and uncertainty!

THANKS!

I just tried replacing the 3 AK files in the Data3d.pbo from both the operation flashpoint/DTA folder and the operation flashpoint/Res/dta folder.  Here are the results:

Replacing the first data3d.pbo in operation flashpoint/DTA had no effect whatsoever, the same old BIS AK47 and AK74 were still in the game.

Replacing the data3d.pbo in the operation flashpoint/Res/dta folder resulted in not being able to launch the game at all, I got the following error:

"Warning preNLOD format in object data3d\obloha.p3d"

So simply replacing the 3 AK files with the 3 renamed copies of the AK47CS.p3d doesnt work...  :(

What must I do to get it working?  Eviscerator, have you had a look at the AK47CS.pbo contents?  It seems very complex for just a single weapon:

AK47CS.pbo contents:

config.cpp
ak47cs.p3d
ak47nb.p3d
optika_ak47cs.p3d
ak47_optika_muska.paa
dl.pac
nabojnicebck.pac
nabojnicetop.pac
QS_AK1.pac
QS_AK2.pac
QS_AK3.pac
QS_AK4.pac
QS_AK5.pac
QS_AK6.pac
ak47a.wav
ak47b.wav

Im lost!  How hard could it possibly be?!

easiest way is to edit the config.bin ,or rather , a cpp if you got one...
the weapons are defined in class CfgWeapons.
find the AK74 class and tell it to use the custom model instead of the standard model by replacing the line "model=" with the path to the model.

I tried just swapping the weapon .p3d file and ensuring the new weapon pbo was in addons folder and wayhey it works perfect - ive also swapped some of the p3ds from Inquisitors high detail weapon pack, lovely :)
