All my maps become flat.
« on: 31 Mar 2003, 14:45:48 »
I have a problem with my maps' height differences.

1. I make the terrains with Terragen.
2. I make some smoothing/add noise/sharpening with Wilbur.
3. I save it as a .txt file.
4. I import it to WrpEdit and do all the needed editing (flags, terrain texture etc..).

But... When I press preview, all I can see is almost flat terrain.
What looked like a huge mountain in Wilbur, looks now more like a small hill. ???

You can try to scale it to 1.5 and look
Still flat?
Do it again and again. You'll see you have enormous mountains after doing that

Rather than use a terragen or wilbur try using imagetoascii (its a tiny program on this site.

You just create a 256 x 256 greyscale bmp in any painting package. White is the highpoint.

When you run the program set min height at 0 or -5 and max height about 200. That should give you a balanced contour map.

I found terragen and wilbur to be hard to use. I just could not get the terrain I wanted out of them.

Also, import the data as 1 1 .  not as 3 3 . like wilburs mesh data.

The path I use is this:

USGS DEM file > MicroDEM (edit and convert file) > MicroDEM to DEM file conversion > Wilber (edit edges of map) > WRPEdit

Works a treat.  ;D

All the easily available high quality ones are of the USA. What you could do is find one that is similar....and just edit!  ;D
