Damn, 3 is down.
« on: 22 Jan 2003, 18:17:37 »
oh no, six is down.
Last time i checked squaddies new each other by name and not number, so on that vein,is there any way to disable this most unrealistic comment from OFP and override them with "aww Jeez, Jimmy just bought the farm" or some other more appropriate requiem? ???

numbers is more real, cause in a some big warfares, you donÂ't know all guys you fight with, and then it will be more like:

- This is Jimmy, D.... hmm, whatÂ's his name again? You know him, D-d, somethin on D.
- Who the hell is Jimmy? Do you know this guy David?
- David! That was his name!
- What?! Is David down?! Oh no! He was my best pal.
- No IÂ'm here, who the hell is that other David?!
- Whats his last name?
- Who? David alive or David dead?
- David dead
- I dunno, but David alive is Johnson.
- I know! IÂ'm Eric! David deads last name was Belt.
- Who the hell is Eric?!
- ItÂ's me!
- Who is this guy?!
- I think he is Eric
- Really?! Cause I didnÂ't think that (Insert Sarcastic voice here).
- Hey! I hate smart mouths, kick his ass!

Then the squad wants truce with the east side, and stands up trying to figure this out. Unfortantly, the east sniper didnÂ't know about the truce, and the west side didnÂ't excist more.

Get the picture? ;D

Well I've never been in a war and hopefully never will be.. but that was just plain funny  ;D

If I was to die in a war I'd like to be spoken with my name and not my numbeer.
Seen a vouple of war movies and they never say "oh dear, 3 is down"

It's alright in a mission with respawn and lot's of action.. say a paintball mission or some capture and hold..  But in a quiet sneaking or patrol mission with a real plot and athmosphere based on the lack of enemy I'd reallly like to see the officer cry out

-(officer)Noooo! Johny just stepped into a mine!!
-(the group) oh dear oh dear. it was his birthday today.
-(random guy) johny had a feeling that might happen and gave me a letter to send for his wife and kids
-(officer) Johny was the best soldier a group leader could ask for.
-(random guy)we should buey him with his gun. He would have wanted that.
-(random guy) *kisses Johny on the cheak for one last time*

Like in movies, it makes us feel more deeply when a guy has a name. say in Saving Private Ryan it totally acceptible that a 500 US troopers get shot in 3 minutes when landing at the beach because we don't know their names. But when the group goes out to look for Ryan it's a terrible shame when someone from the group gets whacked.  8) I rest my case  ;D
Not all is lost.

I think itÂ's better with numbers. Armstrongs unit have only known each other 3 weeks, itÂ's different when 20 soldeirs in WW2 1944, they have probably known each other at least several months.

Hmmm...maybe we have to differentiate between two situations:

a) trained soldiers, would probably use numbers, at least I have learned it that way.
For several reason, communication is much shorter, and less to misunderstand, and you don't have to know the guys (of course that helps more or less).
And you are more likely to stay focused on the job at
hand, and get less distracted

b) not trained or very poorly trained people or soldiers

Yes, using numbers is way better for tactical purposes. If a soldier reports '1 is down', the leader knows right away that the pointman was shot and can act accordingly. If the soldier reported 'Johnny is down!' then the leader must first think about where the hell was Johnny in the first place, was he on point? Or maybe he was at the back? Hmm, who knows... ;D Also, using numbers helps you remember your position in formation. For example, in wedge formation, 1 is on point, 2 is on the left, 3 on the right, 4 on the left again, 5 on the right and so on:
1
2  3
4    5

And in very large numbers, itÂ'll be like:

                  100004                                                                100005
                 100006                                                                  100007
                100008                                                                    100009

But a problem arises when one member of the squad professes the death of someone two times, with a different voice.

3, in a deep, manly voice: "Oh nuts, Johnny just went down! Man down! Man down!"
Seconds later...
3, in the high-pitched youthful voice that was pre-set in the player edit menu or the editor: "Oh no...2...is down...."

LCD, the code is sweet, but essentially the calling out of different names & events is so that it can be adapted to suit similar circumstances. ie since it takes some time for a unit to announce if he is injured it might be a good idea if he was scripted ( or one of his buddies) to shout "MEDIC!" ( as the injured man cries for his mother). This way it would add to the atmosphere of the game and let you deal with the situation before the injured & stupid soldier gets up to have another go at the enemy, with the likelyhood of immenent death. :-\

Unlike armstrongs version of ofp which has massive battalion strength battles, the game is a squad based tactical shooter that has 12 members of a squad, not all called dave/jimmy/cowboy. The intention would not be to have an enormous "we were soldiers" type firefight and have them all roaring about who bought the farm, but for campaigns where the same squad ( with replacements) would be brought throughout - much like the mighy eighth bomber sim. If the ofp death announcements could be sidelined completely then it would add another dimension (humanism) to the game.

Nevertheless, the code has been tried and when its got all the custom voices, such as "Medic!","Keep movin","requesting fire mission, over" etc. i will let the forum know how it has gone.

G'Luck ;)
