Maximum unit limit?
« on: 09 Nov 2002, 01:43:56 »
I am creating a mission where the more men there are, the better.  What I would like to know is; Is there a maximum limit to the amount of units you can place into a mission?

If there isn't a limit, what is the recommended max amount of units you can place before the lag becomes too intense, and a P3 1Ghz can't handle it anymore?

Thanks,
Rambo

Maximum amount of unit = 63 groups per side
                                    12 units per groups
x == 63 * 12 * 4 (while 4 represents the available sides)

Now it's your turn to count out, how bix X will be  ;)

The limit is 63 groups of 12 individuals

For each WEST, EAST, RESISTANCE and CIVILIAN.

so 63 x12 = 756
Times 4 sides = 3024 individuals

You just have to remember to group the soldiers

I my self have missions out and down-loadable of 200 individuals a side and am beta testing light air cavalry battalion missions of 700 plus a side along with scripted replacments

The main times lag is experienced are when you can see a lot of units (so reduicing view distance and detail helps) the other major cause are large battles on the map but not in your view.

Of particular interest are the number of weapons with a high rate of fire so shilkas can cause lag surge.

Frankly your computer will grind to a halt before you reach the limit on individuals in OFP but I use a 633mhz celeron 256mb GF2mx 64mb to develop missions on as this makes me careful about how I load the processor and even playing 700 a side as long as they are dispersed and the players accept reduced view distance/quality is fine.

If you want high quality video and 1400 plus soldiers visable you will need an ultra high spec machine.

But hey if you playing with this amount soldiers your playing with the command engine and you dont have much time to sit around an enjoy the scenery not even in my 2 or 3 day air cavalry mission.

Beware that on 1.46 some objects addons are listed as Civilians and can cause this problem when you put in some addon objects like lines of fences (but if you [F2] in the editor and link the fences together the problem disapears)

Kind Regards walker

Thank you for the great response!  Now I kind of have an idea on what I can/cannot do.

Thanks again,
