changing sound file paths in description.ext
« on: 09 Jul 2007, 15:51:16 »
i have been everywhere and tried everyone, to find out how to access the british mlrs voices, i believe were made for ukf, inside the arty.pbo of coc's ua.
so far, i have tried coc, fdf, ukf and the falklands mod team (for whom this request is to do with). the closest i've come to an answer is from dinger over at coc. the last thing he told me was this:
Quote
In the mission description.ext, define radio messages with the same name as those you want to replace, and point them at the target (the MLRS is ProjectUKF, which is why it doesn't have a yank accent). You can record your own, and do it that way.
That _should_ overwrite the old messages.

this solution has been proposed in place of changing the soundfile names inside the pbo. as this is something that coc have requested not to do. and their wishes, of course, should be respected. the sound files i'm talking about are the ones that call back to you during an artillery request - 'mike, tango, oscar', 'rounds complete', 'shot', 'splash' etc. currently, the default is american accent soundfiles, but i've opened the pbo and found british voices in there that say the same thing. but i need to know how to access them and set the ua callbacks to call up these voices, not the american ones.

dinger's suggestion sounds doable, but i don't know how to change a soundfile path from inside the description.ext. (or anywhere else, for that matter). dinger seems to have gone awol over at coc, and no-one else seems to know what he means. can any of you experts help me? cheers, filth.  ???

Here is what I think he means. Find how the American sound files are named. Not their file names, mind you, but the variables which point to them in the addon. I am not familiar with addons, but do they have their own description.ext? If so the answer is in there. Now make a note of each variable and the sound to which it corresponds.

Next, look at the British sounds, this time the file names/paths. Note these.

Now for you own mission description.ext you want to redefine the sounds using the original variable names but using the British file names. Basically cut and paste the definitions for the Yank voices into your description.ext but replace the file names/paths with those for the British sounds. I presume that the definitions in the mission description.ext will over ride the others.

If you are not familiar with description.ext then read the tutorial in the Ed Depot(ED) tutes section. It explains how to define sounds.
