Desaturation
« on: 31 May 2006, 07:43:26 »
Is there any Feesable way to desaturate a camera and to make it look more like an old film? I was considering using a cutrsc which took up the entire screen(with alpha channels), but im not sure that would do the job properly

You'd need a series of Alpha channels that looped. So several images in sequence that had small amount of artifact on them. Kind of like you suggested.

ahh right then I'll have a go at that, Its hard to make the alpha Channels Desaturate Properly though as they Just Tend to darken what the player sees a bit, I'll try starting over again with a darker colour  :)

What program are you using to make the alpha channels?

I don't think you can actually desaturate anything with just an alpha channel, after all, desaturating basicly means removing all the color data (at least in photo editing software :P )..

The 'film grain' effect is doable via alpha channel though, like said..

yup, i think what Ding means is not only having all the crackles and bits of hair in the cutscene, but also making the colour a bit faded, or even duotoned. the first bit is perfectly doable as has been pointed out.

the second bit i'm not too certain on. it's possible to use a similar technique and create a semi transparent resource over the screen as the 'movie' is playing, but it will look like just that - a layer slapped over the screen, and not really the effect you're after. it won't desaturate the colours, it will just make everything look a bit more brown or whatever colour you make the layer.

a combination of the two will probably come close, but i think you'll have to compromise in the end as with so many things in flashpoint ;)

That's how I would to it. I tried it one time on a mission of mine with kind of a brown colour. It looked ok.
