One way to get started is to download Visitor (the program BIS used to make their maps). You will find it here:

Anyway, a bad idea for OFP:

- There are no "maps". You don't create a small 3D world from scratch and place some enemys in it.

- OFP is "islands" and "missions". The normal way is to create a mission on an existing island, as creating a good island will take longer than a mission.
That's because an island is not just a "map", it's a big terrain for many possible missions.

- If your hometown doesn't look like the OFP buildings, you'll have to model and texture your own objects with another programm. (called o2) - And you'll have to model them with performance in mind, not as detailed as you would like to create them.

- If you just want to recreate the roadmap in main and don't care about the terrain and buildings, you can do it without island editing and modeling.
Just find an empty space on an island, install the Editor Update Addon and place roads and houses how you need them in the mission editor. - But it's very likely you'll encounter performance problems with a big city.

-  And at last you don't want to do all this, really!  ;D
Just because the OFP AI can't handle villages like you know it from other games for which you create "maps". Either they will run around and through houses (walls!) like headless chickens, or you'll place them stationary while creating the boring atmosphere of a shooting range.

Welcome back to the forum!

Trapper is right:   "map" is not a good word to use in the context of OFP editing as it doesn't really mean anything.   He is also right that you don't want to devote too much time and effort to this, as it probably isn't worth the trouble.    Urban combat in OFP is not fun.  And if you create something too big the lag will make it even less fun.

You have three options.   Create a whole new island:  create some new buildings and place them on an existing island:   or just place existing buildings on an existing island.

If you want to create your own island you will find plenty on island editing in the Editors Depot.    If you want to create your own buildings then the Ed Depot will also provide plenty of help.

Probably your best bet is to hunt around for some likely looking mods, islands and addons that already exist, and combine them into roughly what you want.

It's a nice idea though.   I think we'd all quite like to do that  ... it's much more fun blowing up places you know.  ;D

I'll leave this thread here for now, but it may be on the wrong board:  once we know more about what exactly you want to do then we can move it if necessary.

It's the same as any ofp editing - anybody can do it, but it takes a bit of effort.
