Smoke or dust from soldiers if they are shot
« on: 29 Nov 2005, 02:23:15 »
hello,

In a lot of ww2 movies(band of brothers, saving private Ryan) when soldiers are shot a small cloud of smoke or dust that is greyish comes off the soldier where he got shot. I dont know if this really happens and I dont know what would cause it if it did happen, but I was wondering if anybody new anything about that. and if it was realistic could sombody make a script simulating that in ofp?

it seems a lot more so in SPR then in BOB

look closley at the german partialy obsured by the stick on the soldier.

Acually it dont come that much dust from shooting someone.. Perhaps a little if the soldiers have been crawling on the ground.. Jesus it dosnt even come that much blood if you shoot someone.. But yes it would be a cool effect..  :)

do you have any experience to support that?

I have know idea weather that happens or not, I just noticed it alot in movies.

If your sure that no smoke comes out then il not ask anybody to make it.

thanks

My guess:
It's evaporation, caused by high humidity.
You know these days, when someones warm, wet skin or clothing starts to evaporate visibile, because the air isn't able to absorb anymore moisture.
When a person is hit, wet clothing and wound could extremely evaporate in the moment of impact.

This would make the effect only realistic for rainy season in Asia or wet, cold and foggy days in Europe. (Like your photo)

The dust is also caused by the fine particles that settle on the clothes. The fine particles are usually caused by a nearby explosion that damaged a concrete, or brick building. There may be large chunks flying from the wall of the building, but there are also millions of tiny particles that fly off also and easily settle in the lining of the soldiers clothes.

Perhaps something to notice would be that there should be less 'dust' from the soldier every time he his shot. That might need to be incorporated into the script.

I believe that there will be one problem that the scripter may encounter.
It being that it is very difficult to find out where the bullet may have hit the soldier.

One way to avoid this would be to get the velocity of the bullet, and calculate the most likely point of impact. I'm not sure exactly how to do this myself, but if the scripter might want to look more into vector mathmatics.

This site might either help to brush up on vector mathmatics, or get you to know how it all works.

I'm not sure if the velocities that OFP return will be easy to apply here, so this might not be the best choice, in fact I wouldn't recommend it at all.

The second solution to the problem could also be to use the "hit" eventHandler. I believe that the event handler can return the body part where the bullet hit. This is a bit less accurate than the vector mathmatics, but most likely will suit most of your needs

you could use a hit eventhandler to find what part of the body got hit and use a position (found through testing) that will create smoke at the right spot

I think addevent shud be used

but, first of I want to settle if this really happens or not.

I think Bluelikeu's theory makes more sense, but I kinda think its just a Movie thing,

What I really would like is a veteran to say, ya Ive seen sombody get shot and some dust came off them.
anybody who has seen this in real life wana please step in?

If you want my theory if it did happen.

the high energy impact of the bullet on the clothing causes the fabric to instantly fray and come apart causing a dust like cloud on impact.

haven't been in the army or anything(not even old enough yet) but i have seen a video where swat team took a guy out, and there was a small ammount of dust (or whatever it is) that came off. mind you, this was from an mp5, which is nowhere near as powerful as any kind of rifle (9mm round + bullet is fired at a lower velocity - subsonic even i think) so i would say yes it happens, but not so much like in your pic

i think its actually a combination of bluelikeu's theory and trapper's

well, I found out that if you want to make it happen, just switch blood to off in the options menu. It dosent look very good though.
