Yellow "hovering" objective writing in game
« on: 21 Sep 2005, 04:26:09 »
Ok, I've been through the objectives file that I got from you folks and its helped me a lot but I have a couple of questions now.

How do I get the yellow writing that hovers over an active objective indicating the direction and distance from the players?

What is the best way to make objectives activate in the order they appear in the readme? Is this triggers, waypoints,or markers that do this?

by yellow writing i'm guessing you mean the little square right? thats just a waypoint in recruit mode, it has nothing to do with objectives

as far as the order, generally you should be able to complete objectives in any order, unless something happens only after the previous objective has been met, or your objectives change based on previous objectives, or something like that, so if there is an order, just put the objectives in the oredr they need to be on your breifing..

Yeah the little square that says "move here" or some such and has meters away that count down as you move toward it.

So they'll show up if I switch difficulty to cadet?

Well I'm the mission designer (complete rookie) and I'm trying to set them up. Hence the question.

Two points:

1) Don't play Cadet, play Veteran.  It's much better because it gives you the full experience of the game.  Nobody who switches from Cadet to Vet ever switches back.     If you liked your mother telling you what you do when you were 15, you'll like Cadet.  If you didn't you like Vet.

2) Having said that, it is good mission design practice to put in waypoints for people who are, sadly, playing in Cadet mode.  (If the mission is very hard it can be a legitimate practice technique.)    Use as few as possible, and do not make them do anything:   if you delete them the mission should work fine.
Plenty of reviewed ArmA missions for you to play

Well I always play on veteran and if its a mission I made I jack the units "skill" in the editor up to maximum. Unfortunately thus far in my mission creation experience (or lack of) that is how I added difficulty.

In the last few days I have utilized all of the readme's and tutorials that I have been able to find on the subject and its helped a lot.

Its just that, being new at this, I want to know this editing thing from the ground up and to my knowledge every mission that I have played that comes with the game have these "hovering yellow" deals and I figured it would be a good idea to know how to make them occur. I guess i just didnt realize it was a default thing in cadet. If it is.

Also, whats the trick to opening/using that comref file on a laptop thats less than six months old running XP home? Every time I go to look at it it is like some things are missing.

Also also, where is the best place to download maps? I have tried for three days to download BAS Tonal from filefront and it just aint happening even though I have been able to download many other similar sized files here and there for flashpoint.

Sorry I'm all over the place again.

You have the Official Command Reference from BIS and you can't get it open? It should open just fine with Internet Explorer 6 which I assume you are using. Haven't you noticed that OFPEC has it's own, possibly even better copy of the ComRef. OFPEC's version has comments from users and there's also some command(s) that are not found in the official comref. Go check OFPEC ComRef out.

With "maps" I assume you mean islands. Dunno what's the best place to download them, but ofp.info has a good collection of addons. And did you check OFPEC's Addons Depot already?

Also check Mikero's site, there's some addons too.
