Objectives not working :-(
« on: 11 Sep 2005, 19:27:18 »
Hi.
I've been trying for absolutely ages to get the hang of scripting and I'm (finally) starting to get the hang of it - just basic stuff at the moment, but I'm still proud of myself!

Anyway, I've read all of SnYper's tutorials on Briefing.html, how to use objectives and init.sqs (although I'm not trying the init.sqs yet) but they're not working.

I tried to make a very basic mission, simply kill a load of badguys and you in.  I managed to set up the trigger so when they all die I win and I even get a little message pop-up and say "Objective complete" (top left of screen) when I've done it.
I've made the briefing.html (using snYper's as a template), copied it into my mission folder.........and still nothing's happening.

The briefing, plan, objectives etc. won't show up when I play the mission.

Am I doing something wrong?

(Sorry if this is a very n00b-ish question, but as far as I can see I'm doing everything the way i should and I can't see what the problem is.

Thanx.
Abe.

Welcome to the forum

Firstly, check the file is actually a briefing.html and not a text file (simple but common). If that's not the problem then we need to take a closer look.

Usually the tiniest of errors in a briefing.html will result in a complete disaster. In order to check that all of this is right, could you post it so that we can take a proper look and scrutinise it for this kind of thing?

It's definataly saved as an .html
This is what i wrote, pretty much the same as snYpir's except I changed the details to suite my mission.

<h2><a name="Main"></a></h2>

War is hell.  Jimmy got his head blown off and he's now having trouble talking.<br>

An enemy patrol has being doing recon on our airstrip.  This must be stopped<br>
We need to keep up the idea that there is not a lot of activity, so only one soldier will be sent to take them all out.

<p><a name="Obj_1"></a><a href="marker:obj_1"></a>

<h2><a name="debriefing:End1">Mission Complete</a></h2>
<p>
Well done.<br>

They never knew what hit them, good job.
</p>

I'm new to all of this stuff, so it's probably something really obvious that I've done wrong, but I can't tell what it is. ???

Thanx for the help.

this section is probably causing some trouble. try sticking </p> after the last full stop and before the <hr>.

That should do something.

If your new at this then maybe you should try using a tool like Chris's OFP Script Editor.

http://ofp.gamezone.cz/news/download/CHOFPSE_Setup_240.msi

After using it to make your basic brief you can always open it with notepad to modify.

Also, for your first briefing I'm assuming you used the templates snYper gave you and not making it from scratch. Open up notepad and find the template he included. It should have just some *insert objective here* type things. If you did that and are still encountering problems, then by all means use Chris's editor. ;)

Ah, and Welcome!

an editing tool is a good idea if you are having trouble but only as a last resort i'd say. you can achieve so much more when using the raw html file, especially when it comes to pictures and extra sections. these make briefings stand out and make them far more functional, useful and easy to read.

Thanx for all the help (I wasnt expecting such a big response so quickly).
I'll look into all the options - that'll take a while, for me anyway.lol.

Crave22, I printed off the whole of snYpir's tutorial and did my .html from scratch in notepad.  That's probably where I went wrong.  :(

I'll give Chris' editor thingy a go, atleast that way I might feel I've achieved something.

I only got into this a few days back and it's all completely new to me.  Never dealt with anything like this before.
Thanks again for all the advice, very much appreciated.

If I have anymore problems I'll break down and cry...then com back on to bug you all again.  ;)

WEEHOO!
I used Chris' briefing wizard thingy and it didn't work first time (AAAARGH!) but I've got it working now!
I know its not exactly the biggest achievement to be able to use a wizard programme, but I'm chuffed!
Thanx again for all the help.

Just got to get to grips with the rest of scripting...
...I'm sure you'll be hearing from me again soon.  :)
