Advanced Editing - NEW posting guidelines
« on: 09 Aug 2005, 20:15:31 »
The Advanced editing board.  A quiet, reflective place:  the cloisters if you like.   Here, the sharpest in the OFP editing community can share complex problems and ideas away from hurly burly of the forum at large.

Well, not quite.  The sharp ones and the complex matters are here all right, but shrouded in "noise":  perfectly valid questions which should be on the Editing/Scripting: General board rather than the Editing/Scripting: Advanced board.

We have in the past shied away from moving threads between the Advanced and General boards, not least because the distinction between the two is not well defined.  (It was even worse when we had seperate general Editing and Scripting boards.)   However, partly in light of the many threads on the Advanced board which start with "I'm not sure if this is advanced", we have decided to grasp the nettle and make the Advanced board as it was always intended to be.   "A quiet, reflective place ..." etc., etc..   The objective is to help posters on both boards get speedy and helpful replies to their questions.

From now on, the Advanced and General boards will be moderated more vigorously in terms of the correct placement of threads.   Threads which are on the wrong board will be moved by the Moderators.   To help make the distinction clearer, a number of threads will be moved immediately.  Once everything current is in the right place, and everybody has digested the new guidelines below, then only the occasional misplaced thread will have to be moved.   There will be brief moment of disruption but it will pass quickly.

Remember that the best board for your question is determined solely by the nature of the problem:  it has nothing to do with your sophistication or ability at OFP scripting.   Even the most advanced  and knowledgable editor will hit general problems from time to time.   Nevertheless, if you believe that your thread has been moved incorrectly please discuss it by IM with a Moderator (e.g. bedges or Planck).   If that fails to resolve the issue then contact a Global Moderator (e.g. macguba or Artak).

Questions and comments about this change in policy are welcome in this thread.

Editing/Scripting: Advanced board - posting guidelines
[/size][/b]

  • The Editing/Scripting: Advanced board is for questions relating to Single Player only.   All questions relating to Multiplayer, whether general or advanced, belong on the Editing/Scripting: Multiplayer board.

  • Do not post on the Advanced board unless you have sufficient knowledge of OFP editing, and sufficient familiarity with these forums, to know that your question is advanced.
  • If in doubt, post on the Editing/Scripting: General board.

  • If a thread contains advanced material it belongs on the Advanced board.   For example, if the initial question is general but the thread moves on to a second question which is advanced, then the thread will be moved to the Advanced board.    Another example is when several related questions are asked at once:  if one of them is advanced, then the thread belongs on the Advanced board.
  • It's not so much the question that makes a topic advanced, it's the answer.   An apparently complex and advanced question may in fact have a straightforward answer which means that it belongs on the General board.   Conversely, a deceptively simple question may require an advanced solution which means that it belongs on the Advanced board.
  • Here are examples of some topics that are advanced and others that are general.  It is not a comprehensive list, and in any case many questions will cover several areas.
Advanced
    Sophisticated scripts
    Writing Functions
    Drop command
    onMapSingleClick command
    Dialogues
loadStatus, weaponPool and other campaign commands
    Game engine matters
Creating editing tools (insofar as that is on topic)
  General  (i.e. not advanced)
    Using the Mission Editor
    Triggers
    Waypoints
    Ordinary scripts
    EventHandlers
    AddAction command
    Making fires burn
    Using most commands
    Using an existing function
    Most other questions

  • Here are some examples of recent threads which are general.    All are excellent questions which were were originally (and legitimately) posted on the Advanced board.   Under the new guidelines, they have been moved to the General board.
      General example 1

      General example 2

      General example 3
    • These guidelines are subject to the discretion of the Moderators.    They may also be formally revised from time to time.
