heavy metal...
« on: 19 Aug 2005, 18:41:38 »
i'm trying to setpos a tank out of the way for around 10 seconds, and i thought the best place would be up. i've tried to setpos it varying distances into the blue yonder but it seems so heavy it returns to earth almost instantaneously, even with a setvelocity loop....

is this something others have encountered?

That's normal, you can't setpos "moveable" objects in the air (and keep them there). That includes soldiers, cars, tanks, etc...they all fall down immediatelly.
But you can with buildings, things as static weapons,...

Why don't you setpos the tank to a safe place on the island, it big enough no?

ah well, this is for a suite of scripts which need to be generic, and therefore can fit any island. i had thought of running an island recognition script, and then choosing an appropriate place based on that, so that'll be the next step.

just to correct you ::), setposing of vehicles in the air does indeed work. a soldier will begin falling, as will a chopper, but setvelocity loops can take care of both of those. tanks don't seem to want to behave though...  :-\

Maybe you don't need loops when you setpos the tank really high like 15000m or so. That will take more time then 10seconds before they reach the ground.
You can always make a slow loop where you check the tanks height and if it reaches an "unsafe" height, setpos him back to 15000m.
Nasty I know, but it should work and who will notice?

Bored_onion beat me to it.

I have a mission where Abrams are being carried under neath a chinook (I know!  I was young then!) and then drop by parachute (well 4 chutes each).  That is all done with a setPos loop.

Ah yes those were the days of the real editing discoveries when realism gave way to cool effects.  ;D

It still looks good though and is a nifty gimmick - one which has been included in the soon to be released Shadows of the Motherland Campaign (details below).

#end of shameless plug  :P
