I can't play

I'm not sure if this belongs in this section, but I couldn't find a more suitable place.
Anyway, when I start the game, it goes through the splash screen, until after the BIS logo, then crashes to desktop, giving the error "Error: bad serial number given at startup". And my desktop is set to plain colour.
This is a completely legal version, I bought it in the local shop. I have been playing OFP for ages, and have an obscene amount (about 1.8GB) of addons accumulated, running v1.96. Now, I used to play it a lot, but kinda got tired of it. Then I upgraded my PC and re-installed Windows, and I wasn't arsed to gomaking shortcuts and all again. It was still on my HDD, but Windows didn't recognise it as an installed programme. I think that may have something to do with it.

OFPEC doesn't allow tech questions on the forums.  For those you will need to go to the Official Forums.  A moderator will probably be around soon to say the same thing.

But before you go, it sounds to me like you will probably have to reinstall flashpoint. :-\

ok if i wanst alowed to reply because its not an editing quesiton then sorry  :P

anyways, that message basicly means that no serial number was entered when u installed the game, this could be 2 reasons...

1 - you copyed the data difrecly from the CD without using the setup programf to install

2 - the registry value has been deleted...

if i were you i would back up all my data i need like the user/your name directory as well as your addons then uninstall then reinstall when its all backed up then just put all your stuff back in and it should work

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the problem was that the registry value was deleted when I re-installed Windows. I'm reinstalling the game now, I'll let ye know if it works.

if it works, great - start editing and come and ask some questions. if not, get over to the official forums or the avon lady's site for tech support.
