Can't get enough of this game...
« on: 19 Apr 2005, 13:24:28 »
I got this game 2 months ago.  Every other games that i had been playing prior to this one are totaly forgotten.  I  have been playing this game 12 hours a day. everyday from around 4pm to 4 am for 2 months now. (no kidding).  My social life, my sex life and my work life have taken a back seat for now til I lose the fire for this game , but its been 2 months and the fire is still burning as strong as the first day.   I dont know, i may end up in a hospital one day...  Actually the fire got even hotter because just few hours ago, I just realized that throught the standard game's mission editor, you can put objects in a mission.
Ok now Few questions please:

  - How do you add an Add_on into your game? I did copy one into the \Add_on directory of the game but it doesnt seem to work.  Do i need to activate the add_on after i copy it into the directory or what ?

 -  The name of the add_on i am trying to add is called  "soilders.pbo" which allows 189 groups per side as opposed to normal 63.   Do you know any other Add_ons that does the same thing.  Whether the Add_on is bad or i do not know how to add an Add_on?

- I also need an add_on which lets me put buildings in a mission ?

- This next one is crazy since the map is already huge. but any Add_ons where it lets me add terrain.  For example change some of the sea into dry land.  (I am greedy).

- Any add-on where it lets a group have more than 12 units.

If i get all the ::) things mentioned above. hell i may play this game 24 hours a day!

To use an addon, follow the installation instructions in the addon's readme file.    Usually it just says put the addon in your /Addons folder.    It is then accessible from the mission editor, or will work in a mission which uses that addon.  You don't need to do anything special to "activate it" or make it work EXCEPT that you have to restart the game.

To add buildings and the like get General Barron's Editor Addon from the Editors Depot.

You can't use addons to change the terrain.  However you can create your own maps, or edit existing maps.   You need a programme called wrpEdit.    Tutorials in the Editors Depot.

In fact I strongly recommend you spend a good few hours getting to know what is in the Ed Depot - it's a big place and there is a lot of good stuff there.

Oh, and don't worry about your enthusiasm for the game waning:  it won't.  ;D

Actually, the soldiers.pbo you are talking about, is also a big mistery for me.
I put it in de addonfolder but I can't find it anywhere in the editor.
And the engine doesn't allow me to place more then 63 groups with the addon installed  ???

Playing 12 hours a day can't be healty, but editing 12 hours a day can be worse :)

Hey, to make buildings in your mission, you can best use:

Editor Update Genbed

It has a lot of buildings in it.
Good luck!

Thank you all for your replies.  I did down load editorupdate102.pbo from Genbed for the editor update to supposedly let me put buildings. but i couldnt find any file with that name in my Operation Flashpoint directory to replace.  What am i supposed to do with editorupdate102.pbo.  the readme says replace it with the old one , but where is the old one. which directory?

  - Also my biggest priority right now is to find an Add_on which lets me put more than 63 groups.  I have tried soilders.pbo but it doesnt work. whether it is bad file or i do not know where to put it ( i put it in the \Add_on directory) .  Does anybody knows any add_on which lets me do that?  Now that you are at it. do you also know any add_ons where it lets me have more than 12 units per group.

- I havent tried WrpEdit for map editing yet, but i have a feeling either i wont find it in the Depot or even if I find it, then it wont work.  WHY ? because nothing that I have tried so far to improve my original game has worked so far.

- I am very frustrated.

There were several versions of the editorupgrade102 but you don't need them to use GB editorupgrade102. Just put the pbo in your addons folder and you will find all object in the empty class in the editor
Look in the the menu's with the EU prefix :
EU military buildings,EU roads/fences, EU bush/trees, ...

We all felt like that once.   It takes a while to get everything to fall into place.     ;)   This is a vast and complex game and continued persistence is not a virtue in this context:  if you've tried a few times and it doesn't work, give up and explore something else.   (Don't give up the first time, nothing ever works the first time.)

OFPEC is different from other OFP sites.  Everything in the Editors Depot has been checked.     Same goes for the Missions and Addons Depots.   Many sites do not properly check the stuff that is submitted to them.    I'm not saying the odd problem doesn't slip through the net, and sometimes things that used to be right start to go wrong as the game evolves and the versions change, but as a general principle all resources at OFPEC are functional.

The 63 groups thing is messing with the game engine, its not normal addon stuff which may be why it didn't work.    What do you need more than that for anyway?   And do you have some kind of supercomputer?   Anything you can buy retail can't cope with any more than than 63 anyway.    You can set Resistance to side with East, West or nobody, so even before you start on the mission editor tricks to have loons on different sides you can create a 63 vs. 126 group battle.

macguba, you are the best !

the editorupdate102.pbo worked.  I cant beleive it. now i can make a Stalingrad mission and I dont have to use fortress1 for buildings anymore.  I am excited.  I cant wait for 4 PM to arrive so i can play OFP til 4 am.(12 hours)

I am going to investigate, but how do you set resistance to side with the east(default  is Resistance sides with West but their total is still 63).  Can i also change the resistance uniform to look like the east , because i always have the unit Tags off(More realistic) and West uniform look like Resistance from distance and i dont like to be court marshaled for killing to many West mistaking for Resistance.  if not, then i have to play Russians from now on.

Why i like more than 63 groups?  because to me no group limit makes the sky the limit in this game.  i always like big numbers.  big maps.   it makes the game more realistic.  My missions are giga-missions.  they are more like campaign than mission, so because i put a lot of objectives in my missins so i need a lot of bad guys around to kill.

Thanks again.

Hooray!

When in the mission editor, click on the funny cloud sun box in the top right hand corner.   It's called the Intel Box and here you can do lots of good stuff including setting the attitude of the Resitance.   For more info read my Guide to mission editing for beginners, which you can find in the Editors Depot - Tutes - Getting Started.

You can't easily get the Resy guys in West uniforms.   However, if you have the right addons, you can have somethng acceptable.

If you like giga missions I recommend you have a look at THobson's Abandoned Armies, now testing on the missions beta testing board.    You may also like my own Un-Impossible Mission.    It doesn't use 63 groups for the opposition (it's about 55 I think) but still takes up to 27 hours of game time (plus retries, obviously) to complete.

Remember that this is a sophisticated game:  big is not necessarily beautiful.    Two well placed loons can make an objective much more interesting that 20 badly placed ones.

i would have to say that that is some of the best editing device i have ever heard.

@KEVIN_OFP: as everyone has been saying, don't get discouraged. the OFP mission editor is like no other. i was excited when i figured out how to place a guy!
