Oman (SAS British army)
« on: 12 Apr 2005, 13:11:33 »
Ok i love desert stuff, (and every other theatre of ops) I have always tried to find some models to make an SAS/British army in Oman during the 1970's...the thing is the FN is the perfect weapon for this type of addon so I only need a couple of models of men.

I have always loved the FN Fal from OFP and it was one of the most sucsessful weapons in that conflict as it had better range than the m16 (an SAS fave) and better accruracy than the AK47 (everyone elses fave).

I have some good desert men for East and Res but i need some british guys even if they are quite crude as the SAS would probably wear quite local type clothing in this situation.

the only other addon I know that comes close is the Falklands mod and they haven't finnised yet! (i can't wait untill the Falklands mod is done... it will be amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

You'll need to edit the config to remove the full auto feature on the FAL
to make a British SLR. I would also advise looking for a better "firing sound"
too (the default BIS one is dreadful). The SAS also used sniper rifles (the L42A1)
very extensively in the Oman and Dhofar campaigns. There is a decent L42A1
available in the Malvinas Mod.

From what I have seen the SAS in that campaign tended to wear long
khaki trousers (some seem to have improvised camouflage patterns
daubed on with brown dye or paint or whatever), khaki shirts and anoraks,
native style shamags, head scarves, and khaki bush hats (of the same
style as the US "boonie hat"). Rucksacks were worn on ops away from
the BATT houses. I do not know of any addon troop packs that would
fit the bill straight "out of the box". There is an "Afghan rebels" pack
that have troops in "roughly" the right type of clothing. You can download
the Afghans from here:

 http://ofp.gamezone.cz:8021/ofpd/unofaddons2/sov_ainf.rar

They are "sort of" Ok as is, but the webbing is inappropriate of course.
If you are up for some "remodelling" then you could quite quickly convert
these into reasonably convincing SAS from the Oman/Dhofar/Radfan
campaigns. Some of the faces are very "Afghan" but 'photos do show
SAS men in Oman with deep tans and lots of facial hair, so this is OK.

But the "Falklands" troops will not be appropriate for a desert campaign.
They will all be wearing "CW" (ie. Cold Weather)  clothing. I am also
working on SAS troopers from the 1980s but again these will be in
"temperate" clothing only.

Nice to see someone else interested in the British Army, though.   :)  Good
luck with your campaign!
