creating an intro and an outro
« on: 27 Jan 2005, 06:50:26 »
Hi everyone. I had to take some time off due to the death of my mom during the holidays. But, I'm back and I'm on a learning curve so to speak. I have the mission making down, but what I would like to learn is how yo make an intro and possibly and outro for a mission. Now, I have looked through the tut section and I didn't see anything to help an ABSOLUTE beginner, such as myself. So, if anyone knows of a tutorial that deals with this please let me know. Thanks...

Well I was an absolute beginner a couple of months ago so I can understand some of the confusion.  The problem is you ask a very wide question. To get started:

When I started what confused me most was the simple stuff  like why was my player doing nothing, and how do I stop the intro.

Think of the intro as a mission in itself, except you have no control over the player.  Click the Intro button in the editor and you get a blank map.  Put things (units, waypoints, trigegrs etc.) in there and when you press preview they will all move about in the way you have told them to.

End the Intro in the same way you end a mission using a trigger with one of the End types.

If you create a script file called  initIntro.sqs it will run automatically at the start of the intro, so in here you can put things like starting some music and it can also run the script that you will need to write to control the camera.

For use of the camera there is a lot of stuff in the editors department to teach you what to do.

The 'mission' you create on the Intro map will run automatically before the briefing is displayed.

For an outro the principle is the same.  Think of it as a standalone mission with its own map.  It will run automatically after the de-briefing at the end of the mission

I offer my sympathy

Very sorry to hear about your mum.   Hope you're ok.

Intro and Outros must have a player unit, although you can't control this unit and (assuming you have a camera script running) it has no special significance.

Just in case you're not au fait with cameras, read snYpir's Intro to Camera Scripting and messiah's camera.sqs tutorials.

Everybody has their own technique, but I recommend you make the Intro work as you want before starting to film it.   I use camera.sqs to watch what is going on.

There is no fundamental difference between making an Intro and a cutscene that plays during the mission.
