i think this would be a trigger help???
« on: 27 Jan 2005, 22:37:08 »
ok .. here is my problem...i have mad this mission.(havent we all) and in it i have 4 assault squads of rangers(AS1,AS2- and AS3,AS4 are resurves). i also have 4 security squads (basic grunts)three are at base camp and the forth at a second base camp.now at each base camp i have base security placed.. i also have three UH60's (unarmed) two at main base camp. and the third at second base camp...

Now the mission:   map is on Everon,  main base camp is at Sant Pierre, second base camp is located at Regina...

There are four enemy locations: 1-Verno,2-Durras,3-Levie,and the fourth is at the small base at grid: Fi-67

Ok now action:  AS1 and AS2 are flown in by UH1,UH2 and droped off and clear Verno and Durras, once secured..security teams 1,2 and 3 head there by truck and hold/secure.

Once the security teams reach their locations, UH1 & 2 pick up AS1 &2 andtransport them at Levie and the enemy base(with the same MO as the first..secure and hold)once secured then security teams 3 travles there by truck & 4 gets air lifted by UH3 from base camp2.

Once the security teams get there then UH1 &2 air lift AS1 &2 back to main base camp, mission complet...  or is it??

now what if the village of Verno and or Durras puts up a good fight and AS1 & or 2 are killed ...this is where i get stuck....

How do i have it that AS3 & AS4 come to their rescue... or maybe that AS1 is taken out at second engagement and needs resurves there( at Levie or small enemy base, where ever AS1's second WP is set for) and not haveing the UH60 siting in a hover for all times end and haveing the security teams travel to their WP's and not sit at base camp waiting with their M16's up their A**???

PS: "you"as the player are one of the resurve Assault squads.

now i have tryed triggers to set it if east are dead then way points go as i want...but if any of the AS teams are taken out...all is F*cked.

Good Evening,
Hope Ive got the story right here.
Youve got grunts following Rangers after the area is secure.
Now if the Rangers get low in count you want the security teams to come in and support.
One solution is to script the movements of the support teams.
Call a script that moves them to their next location (either the secured area or the support local) when the Ranger count gets below a certain point or the area is secure.
Second solution is to use the use the waypoints condition field for the security units (AS3 & AS4 I think?).
Set their move condition the same as the script above:
(count group rangers < x) OR (count side east == 0)
Using a script you could tell your security team to move to the leaders location (leader AS3 move getpos leader Rangers) then set their behavior and combat mode when they get close enough.
Hope this helps, the description was long and sort of hard to follow.

SB...

If the player is a member of the squad, then the answer is "It's all triggers and waypoints."   In particular, if you are not familiar with switch triggers (which are the real secret to doing stuff like this) then read the tute in the Ed Depot.

If the player is the squad leader, its slightly different.   You still need switch triggers and waypoint for the other squads, but the triggers relating to the player's squad will do things like fire radio messages giving him orders.

However ..... and it's a big however ..... I recommend you have a serious re-think about your mission.     90% of what you described is stuff that the player will never see and has nothing to do with him.   You can create it all, sure, but its an awful lot of effort, the only outcome of which will be a bunch of lag.

When creating a mission, it is important to distinguish clearly between two things.    Firstly, what is the environment in which the mission will be played?    Secondly, what will the player actually do?

Sometimes it can be hard to decide which is which.   In this case, from you description, I suspect you may have blurred this lines a little.   All this initial attack doens't need to occur in the mission:   it is part of the first question, not the second.    The player needs to believe that it has occurred, but this can be acheived with some radio messages, simple troop movements and dead bodies in the right places.    You don't need to create the battle that happened just before the player arrived:   all you need to create is the result of the battle.

If really do want to create it, then consider making it the Intro so the player can at least watch.   This will also greatly improve the sense of immersion:  you've watched your buddies get blown up and you really want to go an help.

Getting started in mission editing has a very steep learning curve.  So many things depend on each other it's hard to get under way - every time you try to learn something it depends on something else.

It's a good idea to spend time just playing in the mission editor, trying out little ideas and, when you get stuck, seeing if you can find a solution somewhere.    Also, skip through lots of tutorials (all of the ones in the Getting Started section at the very least) so that when you hit a problem, you can say to yourself "hey I think I remember reading about that somewhere".

You don't really need to change your .sqs to anything in order to view it again in Notepad.

Just right click the file and choose....'Send to' or 'Open with' .......then Notepad.

It's ok that your .sqs files "turn into" some kind of notepad thing.    Both Notepad and OFP cope fine with that.  :)
