recommendations for radio effect noise crackle
« on: 15 Jan 2005, 04:44:32 »
any recommendations on how to get the noise crackle effect into my voice files to sound like they're coming from off a radio but without the words at the bottom of the screen?

I usually put a real radio, tuned in between stations, close to the mic while recording. Or you can make a crackling effect by pressing a piece of paper to a ball close to the mic. There are hundreds of ways. Only limit is your imagination  ;D

I've heard a good way is to buy yourself a cheap walkie talkie set, and record the sounds through that (sounds crazy, but I've heard some pretty 'good' distortion effects come out of it ;) ).

If you can get some software that will do it, even better. Find yourself a friendly sound engineer and twist their arm :)

it lets you add white noise in radio transmissions and its free!

Roxio comes with a sound editor that lets you add noise, clicks, hum and also reduce the bandwidth of the sound making it sound radio like.  It is not free.

I also use nominesine's method of recording a real radio then merging the voices in with it

Pinch an .ogg file from one of the campaign missions, then copy the static from the beginning or end of the file. then copy and paste until you've got a good length of it, being sure to iron out repeating annoyances. You'll see what I mean.

*Edit

Just checked. There is no background static on BIS files. Sit tight.

its a sci fi voice plug in.  they used it for freespace two, jedi knights and all those games.  its best to register it, because if unregistered and you own a copy of cool edit, the thing makes you wait ten seconds and you can only use it once.  if you go to use it a second time, it will countdown backwards to infinity and you'll have to control alt delete your way out of the program, restart and use it again so i suggest you get yourself a copy of cool edit any way possible, then pay to register this sci fi plugin.  It's amazing.

Sounds added to the cfgradio section of the description.ext automatically get a bit of static added in the background when they're played in game.

It's not very much though, and you should still crop the sound to make it sound like it's coming from a radio ;)
