Well the best thing you can do for the basics is experiment with *EVERYTHING*
Be it units, groups, waypoints or whatever try everything out.
You'll learn a great deal that way.

If you'll all excuse a bit of self-advertising  :-[ ....... In the Editors' Depot under "Tutorials" (down the left hand side) look for "Getting Started."   You'll find a tutorial called Macguba's guide to mission editing which was written especially for people like you.    I remember all too well what it feels like.

And yes, it does tell you how to place a unit.  8)

Have fun!

YAY!!

I know how to do some basic stuff, but I just wanna know a few things.

When I place waypoints, The sign saying "MOVE 250m" for example doesnt show, but the effects n stuff work on it.

Also for an ending trigger i type "ForceEnd" On Activation Field but it wont end.

Thx for the help btw, I am reading a tutorial and am getting the hang of it, but I am stuck on those two atm.

The onscreen WP markers only show if you are playing in Cadet mode.  The default for the editor is veteran mode.  You can start the editor in cadet mode if you first start a single player mission in cadet mode, then exit and start the editor.  You dont need to finish the mission, just get to the briefing.  Then when you use the editor it will be in cadet mode.

As for ending the current game with a trigger.  Use the Type options in the trigger.  Make your trigger a End#1 type and the game will end.  There are lots of end types you can choose from, these allow you to make multiple debriefings if you so wish, along with a Loose (meant to be lose but its mis-spelled), that will end the mission and show the failed debriefing, if you have made one.

Also I need to know how to make notes on the breifing and plan stuff on breifing, after that my map will be complete then I can go for more advanced.

There is a good tutorial on briefings, by snYpir I think.   Have a read and come back to us if you have any specific problems.    I know there's a lot to absorb in one go and completing your first mission is a bit of a nightmare, but once you have done it once it all gets MUCH easier.   ;)

Ok will do, if any of you have the time, could you post here about making a breifng or giving me a link to a tut on one plz.

Also, the only other problem is that when playing it the waypoints show on the map and it doesn't look like the others. hmmm.

I'm not giving up, I wanna make a kick arse mission for my cousin, he is in intensive care atm comming out of a coma, so I want to do something for him, not so much for me, but I wanna make him happy. :)

And I'm sure he will enjoy it, I got the idea and I know what type of missions he likes, just gotta perfect the basics then move onto the harder stuff.

Thx for helping guys, I will keep comming back.

:)

If you open up any waypoint in the mission editor you'll find a line near the bottom  that says - always show - never show - show only in cadet mode.     That's the bit that makes waypoints appear or not on the map.     Place some waypoints with different settings, then hold the SHIFT key and click on Preview and you'll see what I mean.

Finding the tuts is easy .... click on Editors Depot at the top of this screen, then (down the left hand side) the section you want.    A tut on a particular file - in this case the briefing - will be in the "OFP file formats" bit.    snYpir's tut will tell you everything you need to know.

Don't worry about advanced stuff - you can make a pretty good mission with just the basics.

All best wishes to your cousin.   Hope he gets out of intensive care ok.

Another question.

How do you make it so that you must kill all enemy soldiers then a trigger says ok its clear or something and then you can move on and so on?

This is covered in any trigger tutorial ..... but since I'm here anyway  ;)

Place your trigger over the area that you want to be clear of the enemy.    Experiment to get it the right size - too big and the player will be scurrying around trying to find the last baddie lurking in a bush:  too small and the trigger will fire while you are still being shot at from just outside the area.

condition - enemy not present
on activation - hint "The town is clear"; "1" objstatus "done"

Assuming that you have made "clear the town" the first objective then the trigger will mark it with a green tick.

Keep at it - mission designing can be a bit frustrating at the start because there is so much to take it, but once you've got the hang of it it's dead easy.

Hope your cousin is on the mend.

Thx, I find that the tutorials really don't help me much with other things I wanna do for my missions.

I was looking also to see how I could make an intro, I know now it's pretty easy but it doesnt say how to add it and make the intro appear then game start for example, I will keep trying things out, but I am gonna make a kick arse mission soon enough.

 :D Well, some ppl make their intro's in the normal "mission" part of the editor;

(here's a quote from an ol.. a young ( ;) ) friend of mine) :
The trick to it is to place any unit (make one you will delete later if necessary)
DIRECTLY on top of a bush, or something that is easy to recognise when the map is clear.
Select everything (drag box with mouse). Put your mouse cursor directly over top of your unit,
and use CTRL + C  (copy)

Now bring up the intro section, find your bush.
Put the mouse cursor directly on it, and hit CTL + V. (paste)  :-* 8)

Now everything should more or less be in the exact same place, in the intro section.

:o This is good if ya wanna have a view on some battlefield or alike,
say used in an intro cutscene to explain/imitate a "live" briefing
or just a guy having a flashback & then you (player) live out his flasback
in the actual mission itself. (babel-babel-babel-my-aunt-eats-spiders)  :P ::) ;D

work on it, m8.  :)

Ok, I think it's best if I just have it at the start, I wanna make a campaign and link my missions together and also make breifings appear n stuff, I will have a look around for tuts on those two things, if anyone knows a good one plz link me here thx.

In the mission editor if you look down the right hand side you will see a load of buttons and stuff.    one of them says "missions".   If you click on it you will get access to the intro and outros.   Intro plays before the briefing, outros after the debriefing.     There are some good tutorials in the Ed Depot on how to create them, for a start you can also look at my recent reply in the Sounds and Cutscenes forum to get you started.   (too pissed to find it myself, sorry ... I've retyped this twice to make it readable .. I keep getting displaced by one key to the left on the keyboard)

Description.ext is the secret to making a campaign.   Also covered in tutes.

Aha, what you mean is a cutscene as soon as the mission starts, staight after the briefing.

The best way is to have a scripted cutscene.   Call the script from a trigger or a unit's init line thus

[] exec "cutscene.sqs"

cutscene.sqs is of course a text file in your mission folder which contains the commands for the scene.   Make sure the player doesn't die during it ....

Don't know anything about linking missions but there is a tutorial on campaigns.

I made a cutsceene as soon as it starts by using a trigger and camera and sound, I find it's easier for me like that.

Now I need to know how to do breifings and I looked in the tuts and there is nothing under breifings that will help me, do you know where a easy good breifing tut is?

Good work on the cutscene.    There are three tutorials relevant to Briefings in the Tutorial department of the Editors Depot.    Start in "OFP file formats" section and look for

Briefing.html file tutorial by snYpir
How to put JPGs in your Overviews and Briefings by Fishion

If you like, follow those with

How to use objectives and init.sqs by snYpir

from the Getting started section

Everything I know about Briefings I learnt from these excellent tuts.

Ahhh ok thanx I will do that, I can't wait till I get my full functional first mission ready..yay!!

Although it might take a while cause it seems there is still some basic things I gotta know, first things first tho off to make a breifing.

BTW, I just love how you can make it so u gotta radio in to end a mission, that is so fucking cool!

 :)
